Growing Jungle Vallisneria — Care at a Glance
Critical: Never Trim the Leaves
Never trim or cut the leaves of Jungle Vallisneria. Unlike most aquarium stem plants, Vallisneria leaves rot from the cut point when trimmed — the damaged section deteriorates and fouls the water. If leaves grow too long and reach the water surface, allow them to grow horizontally across the surface or gently redirect them. Remove only fully dead or completely deteriorated leaves by pulling from the base.
Planting
Plant Jungle Vallisneria with roots buried in the substrate and the crown — where leaves emerge — just at or slightly above the substrate surface. Never bury the crown. A buried crown will prevent the plant from establishing correctly. Space individual plants 2–4 inches apart to allow room for runner development. In gravel or sand, root tabs near the planting area provide valuable supplemental nutrition.
Light
Jungle Vallisneria performs in moderate to high lighting. Higher light produces faster growth and more vigorous runner production. In moderate light it grows steadily and performs reliably. In low light growth slows significantly — moderate light is the recommended minimum for consistent performance. Provide 8–10 hours of light daily for best results.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 68–84°F (20–29°C)
- pH: 6.5–8.0 — notably performs well in harder, more alkaline water where many aquarium plants struggle
- Hardness: Prefers moderately hard to hard water rich in calcium; adaptable to soft water
- Salinity: Tolerates light brackish conditions
- Tank Size: 20+ gallons recommended; can be grown in smaller tanks with management
CO2 & Fertilization
CO2 injection is not required — Jungle Vallisneria naturally inhabits shallow, CO2-limited environments. Regular liquid fertilizer containing iron, potassium, and micronutrients supports strong growth and deep green leaf color. Root tabs near the planting base supplement effectively in inert substrates. Iron supplementation specifically maintains the rich green leaf color that makes Jungle Val so visually striking.
Leaf Shedding on Introduction
Jungle Vallisneria may shed some or all existing leaves when first introduced to a new aquarium — a normal acclimation response. The root system remains active in the substrate and new leaves emerge within 2–4 weeks. Do not remove the plant during this period.
Runners & Propagation
Jungle Vallisneria propagates prolifically via underground runners, producing daughter plants at intervals that fill in the background naturally. Allow daughter plants to develop their own visible roots and 3–4 leaves before separating. Runners can also be removed entirely if spread needs to be managed.
Aquascape Design Use
Plant Jungle Vallisneria in groups along the back wall and sides of the aquarium where its flowing ribbon curtain is most impactful. Leave the center open for swimming space — the flowing backdrop creates depth and scale that makes any aquarium feel larger and more natural. Use it to frame driftwood and rock hardscape, and pair with shorter midground plants for layered depth. For a reddish-bronze color variant of the same species, also consider our Red Jungle Vallisneria.
