Red Jungle Vallisneria for Sale — Flowing Reddish-Bronze Ribbon Leaves for Dramatic Aquarium Backgrounds

If you’ve been searching for Red Jungle Vallisneria for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Vallisneria gigantea rubra — commonly known as Red Jungle Val or Jungle Val Ruby Red — right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Red Jungle Vallisneria is one of the most rewarding and beginner-friendly background plants in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Its long, flowing, ribbon-like leaves arch gracefully upward and reach 24 inches and beyond — creating a lush, swaying underwater curtain that transforms the background of any aquarium into a dramatic, naturalistic jungle setting. Under moderate to high lighting, the leaves develop warm reddish-bronze tones at the tips and increasingly throughout the leaf — a subtle but striking color dimension that sets Red Jungle Val apart from the standard green Jungle Val species. It spreads prolifically via runners, naturally knitting itself into a dense, lush backdrop over time with no intervention required. Red Jungle Vallisneria for sale at Quinn’s Fins is available in two formats — bare root (SKU 460-1, $4.99) and in a 2″ pot (SKU 460-2, $7.99) — both nursery-grown and ready to plant.

Why Red Jungle Vallisneria for Sale Is the Premier Aquarium Background Plant

Red Jungle Vallisneria earns its reputation as a hobby staple through a combination of effortless beauty, rapid growth, genuine hardiness, and the kind of transformative visual impact that few other aquarium plants can approach.

  • Long flowing ribbon leaves reaching 24″+ — one of the most dramatic background plants available for freshwater aquariums
  • Warm reddish-bronze leaf coloration under stronger lighting — a unique color dimension no standard green Vallisneria can replicate
  • Spreads rapidly via runners — a small starter planting grows into a lush background curtain over time with no replanting required
  • Beginner-friendly — one of the most forgiving and adaptable aquarium plants available
  • No CO2 injection required — thrives in low-tech and beginner setups
  • Excellent nitrate and phosphate absorber — actively improves water quality as it grows
  • Provides cover and refuge for fish, fry, and invertebrates — flowing leaves create natural shelter and reduce tank stress
  • Compatible with African cichlids, goldfish, and hard water setups — one of the few aquarium plants that thrives alongside rough fish

Growing Red Jungle Vallisneria — Care at a Glance

Critical: Never Trim the Leaves

Never trim or cut the leaves of Red Jungle Vallisneria. Unlike most aquarium plants that can be pruned, Vallisneria leaves rot from the cut point when trimmed and the damaged section will deteriorate and foul the water. If leaves grow too long and reach the water surface, allow them to grow horizontally across the surface or gently redirect them — do not cut. Remove only fully dead or completely deteriorated leaves by pulling them from the base.

Planting

Plant Red Jungle Vallisneria with roots buried in the substrate and the crown — the central growing point where leaves emerge — positioned just at or slightly above the substrate surface. Never bury the crown. A buried crown will cause the plant to struggle or fail. Space individual plants 2–4 inches apart to allow room for runner development. In gravel or sand substrates, root tabs placed near the planting area provide valuable supplemental nutrition.

Light & Red Coloration

Red Jungle Vallisneria grows in moderate to high lighting but requires stronger light to develop its signature reddish-bronze coloration. In moderate light, leaves are olive to medium green — healthy and attractive, but without the distinctive red tones. In higher light paired with iron-rich fertilization, warm reddish-bronze hues develop throughout the leaf, becoming most intense at the tips. Iron supplementation is the single most important factor in red color development — without adequate iron, the coloration will not fully express even under high light.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 68–84°F (20–29°C)
  • pH: 6.5–8.0 — notably performs well in harder, more alkaline water where many other aquarium plants struggle
  • Hardness: Prefers moderately hard to hard water rich in calcium; adaptable to soft water but grows more vigorously in harder conditions
  • Salinity: Tolerates light brackish water — an unusual advantage among aquarium plants
  • Tank Size: 40+ gallons recommended for full background effect; can be grown in smaller tanks with more frequent management

CO2 & Fertilization

CO2 injection is not required — Red Jungle Vallisneria naturally grows in shallow water environments low in CO2. Regular liquid fertilizer containing iron, potassium, and micronutrients is strongly recommended and directly impacts red coloration and growth vigor. Root tabs near the planting base provide supplemental root nutrition in inert substrates.

Leaf Shedding on Introduction

Red Jungle Vallisneria may shed some or all of its existing leaves when first introduced to a new aquarium. This is a normal acclimation response — not plant failure. The root system remains healthy in the substrate and new leaves will emerge within 2–4 weeks. Do not discard the plant during this transition period.

Runners & Propagation

Red Jungle Vallisneria propagates prolifically via underground runners, producing new daughter plants at intervals that gradually fill in the background. Allow runners to establish before separating — wait until daughter plants have developed their own visible root system and 3–4 leaves before detaching from the mother plant. Runners can also be redirected or removed entirely if spread needs to be managed.

Aquascape Design Use

Plant Red Jungle Vallisneria in groups along the back wall or sides of the aquarium where its flowing ribbon-like curtain effect is most impactful. Leave the center open for swimming space — the flowing backdrop creates a sense of depth and scale that makes the entire aquarium feel larger and more established. Use it to frame hardscape elements like driftwood and rocks, and pair with shorter midground plants to create layered depth.
