Italian Vallisneria for Sale — The Classic Fast-Growing Background Plant for Any Freshwater Aquarium

If you’ve been searching for Italian Vallisneria for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Vallisneria spiralis — commonly known as Italian Vallisneria, Straight Vallisneria, Tape Grass, or Eelgrass — right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Italian Vallisneria is one of the oldest, most widely kept, and most universally recommended background plants in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Its bright green, narrow, ribbon-like leaves emerge from a compact central rosette and reach up to 24 inches tall, swaying gracefully with water current to create a lush, natural underwater meadow effect along the back and sides of any aquarium. It spreads steadily via underground runners, gradually filling in the background without replanting. More compact and manageable than Jungle Vallisneria, it is the ideal choice for medium-sized aquariums and community tanks where a lush planted background is the goal. Italian Vallisneria for sale at Quinn’s Fins is available in three formats — single plant (SKU 459-1, $3.99), bunch (SKU 459-2, $5.99), and 2″ pot (SKU 459-3, $7.99) — all nursery-grown and ready to plant.

Why Italian Vallisneria for Sale Is the Most Practical Background Plant in the Hobby

Italian Vallisneria has earned its decades-long reputation as the go-to background plant through a combination of fast growth, wide adaptability, genuine hardiness, and the transformative visual impact of its lush, swaying ribbon leaves.

  • Bright green ribbon-like leaves reaching up to 24″ — creates a full, natural background curtain in any aquarium
  • More compact than Jungle Val — perfectly sized for 20–55 gallon medium aquariums without overwhelming smaller tanks
  • Fast-spreading via runners — fills in the background naturally without replanting
  • No CO2 injection required — thrives in low-tech and beginner setups without specialized equipment
  • Tolerates hard water and alkaline conditions — one of the few aquarium plants that performs better in harder water
  • Excellent nitrate and nutrient absorber — actively improves water quality and suppresses algae as it grows
  • Natural cover for fish, fry, and livebearers — tall swaying leaves provide shelter and line-of-sight breaks
  • Hides heaters, filter intakes, and equipment — the most practical background coverage solution available

Growing Italian Vallisneria — Care at a Glance

Critical: Never Trim the Leaves

Never trim or cut the leaves of Italian Vallisneria. Unlike most aquarium plants, Vallisneria leaves rot from the cut point when trimmed — the damaged section deteriorates and fouls the water. If leaves grow too long and reach the water surface, allow them to grow horizontally across the surface or gently redirect them rather than cutting. Remove only fully dead or completely deteriorated leaves by pulling them from the base.

Planting

Plant Italian Vallisneria with roots buried in the substrate and the crown — where the leaves emerge — positioned just at or slightly above the substrate surface. Never bury the crown. A buried crown prevents the plant from establishing correctly. Space individual plants 2–3 inches apart to allow room for runner development. For the best placement, position in the background or around the corners and edges of the aquarium. Root tabs placed near the planting base provide valuable supplemental nutrition in inert substrates.

Light

Italian Vallisneria is very adaptable and does well in a wide range of aquarium conditions, including many coldwater setups. It performs in moderate to high lighting — moderate light is sufficient for healthy growth while higher light produces faster, denser growth. In lower light, growth slows but the plant remains healthy. Provide 8–10 hours of light daily for best results.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 64–82°F (18–28°C) — notably tolerates cooler conditions than most tropical aquarium plants
  • pH: 6.5–7.6 — performs best in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions
  • Hardness: Prefers moderately hard to hard water rich in calcium — one of the few aquarium plants that actively performs better in harder water
  • Salinity: Tolerates light brackish conditions
  • Tank Size: 10+ gallons; best in 20–55 gallon tanks where 24″ leaves can develop freely

CO2 & Fertilization

CO2 injection is not required — Italian Vallisneria does not require CO2 supplementation or overly high lighting. Regular liquid fertilizer containing iron, potassium, and micronutrients supports strong growth and deep green leaf color. Root tabs near the planting base supplement effectively in inert substrates. In established fish tanks, the bioload often provides sufficient nutrients without additional fertilization.

Leaf Shedding on Introduction

Italian Vallisneria will sometimes shed its leaves when transported into a new aquarium. It is usually still alive in this state and should not be discarded. It will typically grow new, stronger leaves rather quickly if it is planted and allowed to acclimate. Do not remove the plant during this period — the root system remains active and new growth will emerge within 2–3 weeks.

Runners & Propagation

Italian Vallisneria propagates prolifically via underground runners, producing daughter plants at intervals that gradually fill in the background. Allow daughter plants to develop their own visible root system and 3–4 leaves before separating. Individual runners can be removed if spread needs to be managed — simply pull them from the substrate.

Italian Val vs. Jungle Val — Which Is Right for Your Tank?

Italian Vallisneria and Jungle Vallisneria are closely related and share the same care profile, but differ meaningfully in scale. Italian Val leaves reach 18–24 inches — ideal for aquariums from 20 to 55 gallons where the full leaf height can develop without completely smothering the water surface. Jungle Val leaves reach 24 inches and beyond, suited to tanks 40 gallons and larger. For smaller tanks or aquarists who want a more manageable background plant, Italian Val is the clear choice. Three Ways to Buy Italian Vallisneria for Sale at Quinn’s Fins

Italian Vallisneria for sale at Quinn’s Fins is available in three formats:

  • Single Plant (SKU 459-1) — $3.99: One healthy individual plant with roots, ready to plant directly into your aquarium substrate. The most economical option for trying Italian Val or adding to an existing planting. Trim any damaged roots before planting — never trim the leaves. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Bunch (SKU 459-2) — $5.99: Multiple stems bundled together — an excellent value for establishing a fuller starter planting across the background. Separate individual plants from the bunch before planting, space 2–3 inches apart, and plant with crown above substrate. Rinse thoroughly.
  • 2″ Pot (SKU 459-3) — $7.99: Nursery-grown in a 2″ pot with established root structure. Remove plant and all growing media before planting. Never place pot or growing media directly in the aquarium. Separate individual plants from the pot, rinse thoroughly, and plant with crown above substrate.
