Attachment — Never Plant in Substrate

Fissidens Fontanus has no true root system and should not be planted directly into substrate. Push a small section of the mat into a crevice in a rock, or tie it to driftwood or decoration using thin cotton thread or fishing line — the plant will attach itself within a few weeks. The mat can also be allowed to grow into a carpet-style layout across open substrate, where it spreads via detached fronds that lodge themselves and root in new locations over time.

Light and Temperature Sensitivity

Fissidens Fontanus is sensitive to fluctuations in light and temperature — too much heat or light will cause the fronds to turn brown. Keep tank conditions stable within the plant’s preferred range: low to medium lighting and a temperature between 65–77°F (18–25°C). Avoid placing directly under intense high-output lighting, and avoid temperature swings from heaters, equipment, or inconsistent climate control.

Spreading and the “Phoenix” Habit

Fissidens Fontanus is highly prolific at spreading once established — detached fronds readily lodge themselves in new locations throughout the aquarium and begin growing independently, a trait shared by most mosses but particularly pronounced in this species. Water Quality

Fissidens Fontanus needs a clean tank — if algae is allowed to establish and settle on the fine fronds, it can be difficult to remove without damaging the moss. Cherry shrimp and similar species are excellent tankmates, as they actively graze on organic matter and biofilm that accumulates on the moss, helping to keep it clean naturally.

Propagation

Fissidens Fontanus propagates readily by fragmentation — simply pull apart a healthy clump or snip sections with sharp scissors and attach to new hardscape. In the wild, the species also reproduces via spores formed in seed cases (sporangia) that ripen and crack, dispersing spores that fall onto the parent plant and surrounding area to develop into new growth.
