Description
Fissidens Fontanus for Sale — Soft Wispy Phoenix Moss on a Pre-Grown 3″×3″ Mat
If you’ve been searching for Fissidens Fontanus for sale, Quinn’s Fins offers Fissidens fontanus — commonly known as Phoenix Moss, Water Pocket Moss, or Fountain Pocket Moss — pre-grown on a convenient 3″×3″ mat ready for immediate placement. Fissidens Fontanus is the softer, more delicate North American relative of the rare and prized Fissidens family of aquarium mosses. Where its larger cousin *Fissidens nobilis* grows in stiff, structured, upright shingles, Fissidens Fontanus has a completely different character — its narrow, feathery fronds are soft, fine, and wispy, cascading and weeping gracefully in current with a movement that genuinely resembles the flowing tip of a peacock feather drifting underwater. New growth bursts outward from the center of the plant in random directions, creating the fountain-like appearance that gives this moss its evocative name. Native to North America, Fissidens Fontanus is a lower-growing, easy-care moss well suited to carpet-style applications or trained into flowing, fountain-shaped clumps that make a striking focal point in any aquascape. Our pre-grown 3″×3″ mat (SKU 6135, $10.99) delivers an established patch ready to attach directly to your hardscape.
Why Fissidens Fontanus for Sale Is a Beautiful and Versatile Aquarium Moss
Fissidens Fontanus delivers a soft, flowing texture and genuine ease of care that distinguishes it from both common mosses like Java Moss and its larger, more demanding cousin Fissidens Nobilis.
- Soft, wispy, feathery fronds — a delicate weeping habit unlike the stiff upright growth of Fissidens Nobilis
- Fountain-like growth pattern — new growth bursts from the center of the plant in random flowing directions, giving the moss its name
- Pre-grown 3″×3″ mat — established and ready to attach directly to hardscape; no waiting for fragments to fill in
- Lower-growing and more versatile than Fissidens Nobilis — excellent for carpet-style placement or trained into fountain-shaped focal clumps
- Leaves too narrow for most algae-eating fish to graze on heavily — Siamese Algae Eaters and similar species can coexist without damaging the moss
- Low to medium light tolerant — performs well without high-output lighting or specialized equipment
- Excellent shrimp and fry refuge — soft dense fronds provide outstanding hiding cover and grazing surface for biofilm
- Native to North America — easy to source compared to rarer Southeast Asian Fissidens species
Fissidens Fontanus vs. Fissidens Nobilis — Side by Side
Both species are prized aquarium mosses but differ meaningfully in appearance and care requirements:
| Fissidens Fontanus (Phoenix Moss) | Fissidens Nobilis | |
| Texture | Soft, fine, wispy, weeping | Stiff, structured, shingle-like |
| Growth Pattern | Fountain-like, bursting from center | Overlapping shingles, upright |
| Color | Lighter, brighter green | Deep forest green |
| Height | Lower-growing; carpet-friendly | Up to 4 inches; best in larger tanks |
| Native Range | North America | Southeast Asia, East Asia |
| Rarity | More commonly available | Rare and harder to source |
Growing Fissidens Fontanus — Care at a Glance
Attachment — Never Plant in Substrate
Fissidens Fontanus has no true root system and should not be planted directly into substrate. Push a small section of the mat into a crevice in a rock, or tie it to driftwood or decoration using thin cotton thread or fishing line — the plant will attach itself within a few weeks. The mat can also be allowed to grow into a carpet-style layout across open substrate, where it spreads via detached fronds that lodge themselves and root in new locations over time.
Light and Temperature Sensitivity
Fissidens Fontanus is sensitive to fluctuations in light and temperature — too much heat or light will cause the fronds to turn brown. Keep tank conditions stable within the plant’s preferred range: low to medium lighting and a temperature between 65–77°F (18–25°C). Avoid placing directly under intense high-output lighting, and avoid temperature swings from heaters, equipment, or inconsistent climate control.
Spreading and the “Phoenix” Habit
Fissidens Fontanus is highly prolific at spreading once established — detached fronds readily lodge themselves in new locations throughout the aquarium and begin growing independently, a trait shared by most mosses but particularly pronounced in this species. Don’t be surprised to find small patches of Fissidens Fontanus appearing in unexpected corners of the tank months after the original placement — this is completely normal and is part of what makes the species so easy to establish throughout an aquascape over time.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 65–77°F (18–25°C); browns if exposed to excessive heat
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- CO2: Not required; boosts growth speed and spread when added
- Light: Low to medium
Water Quality
Fissidens Fontanus needs a clean tank — if algae is allowed to establish and settle on the fine fronds, it can be difficult to remove without damaging the moss. Maintain stable, well-filtered water conditions. Cherry shrimp and similar species are excellent tankmates, as they actively graze on organic matter and biofilm that accumulates on the moss, helping to keep it clean naturally.
Propagation
Fissidens Fontanus propagates readily by fragmentation — simply pull apart a healthy clump or snip sections with sharp scissors and attach to new hardscape. In the wild, the species also reproduces via spores formed in seed cases (sporangia) that ripen and crack, dispersing spores that fall onto the parent plant and surrounding area to develop into new growth.
Design Use
Fissidens Fontanus can be grown as a low carpet across the substrate, trained into netting along the back glass to create a flowing green backdrop, or attached to driftwood and decorations to create a cascading, fountain-shaped focal clump — the growth habit that gives the species its name. It pairs beautifully in shrimp tanks where its soft fronds provide both shelter and a continuous grazing surface.
