Description
Java Fern for Sale — The Most Trusted Beginner Aquarium Plant, Available in Six Ready-to-Place Formats
If you’ve been searching for Java Fern for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Microsorum pteropus right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Java Fern is the single most universally recommended aquarium plant in the freshwater hobby — and it has held that distinction for decades for good reason. Its broad, dark green lance-shaped leaves are bold, attractive, and virtually indestructible under a wide range of aquarium conditions. It grows as an epiphyte — attaching its rhizome to driftwood, rocks, and hardscape rather than rooting in substrate — and thrives in low light, requires no CO2, and tolerates the water conditions of virtually any freshwater aquarium. Java Fern for sale at Quinn’s Fins is available in six formats to suit any aquascape, budget, and experience level — from the economical bare root option to fully mounted, ready-to-place driftwood and lava rock pieces.
Why Java Fern for Sale Belongs in Every Freshwater Aquarium
Java Fern is that rare plant that works for everyone — beginners setting up their first tank, experienced aquascapers building complex layouts, cichlid keepers, shrimp breeders, and everyone in between.
- Broad dark green lance-shaped leaves 4–12″ long — bold foliage that creates immediate visual impact in any aquarium

- No CO2 injection required — performs excellently in low-tech and beginner setups
- Compatible with cichlids and goldfish — tough leathery leaves resist damage from rough fish
- Shrimp and invertebrate safe — leaf surfaces provide excellent grazing habitat

- Available in six formats — bare root, potted, mat, lava rock, and driftwood for every setup and budget
Choose Your Java Fern for Sale Format
Java Fern for sale at Quinn’s Fins is available in six formats. Each delivers the same nursery-grown plant in a different presentation suited to different aquascape needs and experience levels:
- Bare Root (SKU 445-1) — $5.99: A healthy rhizome with leaves and roots, shipped without substrate. The most economical option — attach directly to your own driftwood or hardscape using fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe super glue gel. Ideal for aquarists who want to position the plant exactly where they choose.
- 2″ Pot (SKU 445-2) — $8.99: Nursery-grown in a 2″ pot with established root structure. Remove all growing media before placing — never put the pot in the aquarium. Attach the rhizome to your hardscape after removal. Rinse thoroughly.
- 2″×2″ Mat (SKU 445-3) — $13.99: Java Fern pre-grown on a 2″×2″ natural mat — ready to place on rocks, substrate, or hardscape surfaces. Ideal for covering small areas, filling in gaps, or adding texture to rock work and cave structures. Press mat onto hardscape and secure until roots anchor.
- 4″×4″ Mat (SKU 445-4) — $19.99: Java Fern pre-grown on a larger 4″×4″ natural mat — for aquascapers who want broader instant coverage. Ideal for covering the back wall of smaller aquariums, draping over large rocks or driftwood, or creating an instant green backdrop in nano and small tanks. Cut to any shape with scissors.
- On Lava Rock (SKU 445-5) — $15.99: Java Fern securely mounted on a natural lava rock piece — ready to place directly in your aquarium with zero preparation. Lava rock’s porous surface provides an ideal natural anchor for Java Fern’s roots, which grip and spread across the rock surface over time. Lava rock is completely aquarium safe, pH neutral, and provides beneficial surface area for nitrifying bacteria.
- On Driftwood (SKU 445-6) — $24.99: Java Fern mounted on a natural piece of Malaysian driftwood — the most visually complete and aquascape-ready format available. Malaysian driftwood releases beneficial tannins, sinks immediately, and provides the most natural-looking hardscape base for Java Fern. Simply place directly in your aquarium for an instant established centerpiece. No planting, no gluing, no waiting.
Growing Java Fern — Care at a Glance
The Most Important Rule: Never Bury the Rhizome
Never bury the rhizome — the thick horizontal stem from which all leaves and roots emerge — in substrate. A buried rhizome will rot and kill the plant. Java Fern is an epiphyte — always keep the rhizome fully exposed on the surface of hardscape. This applies to all six formats: if any rhizome section becomes covered by substrate or debris, uncover it immediately.
Light
Java Fern is one of the most light-adaptable aquarium plants available — performing in low, moderate, and high light. In low light it grows slowly but remains healthy. In moderate light growth is more vigorous. In high light without CO2, Java Fern may develop algae on its slow-growing leaf surfaces — position under floating plants or taller stem plants for natural shading if algae becomes an issue.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 68–82°F (20–28°C)
- pH: 6.0–8.0 — one of the widest pH tolerances of any aquarium plant
- Hardness: Soft to very hard — extremely adaptable
- Flow: Low to moderate
CO2 & Fertilization
CO2 injection is not required. Regular liquid fertilizer — particularly iron and micronutrients — supports healthy new leaf production. In established fish tanks, the bioload typically provides sufficient nutrients without additional dosing. Java Fern is a light feeder that does not require heavy fertilization.
Black Spots on Leaves — Normal
Black spots or brown patches on the undersides of Java Fern leaves are almost always spore sori — the plant’s natural reproductive structures — and are completely normal and harmless. Do not mistake these for disease or algae. True algae on the leaf surface is green or brown and fuzzy; spore sori appear in organized patterns on the leaf underside.
Propagation
Java Fern propagates naturally via plantlets that develop on the tips and undersides of mature leaves. Allow plantlets to develop their own leaves and root system before gently removing and attaching to new hardscape. The rhizome can also be divided with sharp clean scissors — each section needs at least 2–3 leaves and a root section.
