Description
Cryptocoryne usteriana: A Large, Textured Crypt for Striking Background Planting
Description:
Cryptocoryne usteriana is one of the largest and most visually striking Crypt species, renowned for its broad, crinkled leaves and rugged texture. Native to the Philippines, this slow-growing beauty is ideal for aquarists seeking a dramatic and low-maintenance background plant that adds depth, dimension, and a wild, natural appearance to freshwater aquascapes.
Reaching heights of 18–24 inches, Cryptocoryne usteriana thrives in nutrient-rich substrates and develops deep green to bronze-red leaves under moderate to high lighting. The heavily ruffled edges and thick, sturdy foliage make it a standout in any planted tank, especially in biotope or jungle-style layouts.
Despite its size, C. usteriana is surprisingly hardy and undemanding, tolerating a wide range of water conditions. Like other crypts, it may undergo an initial “melt” phase when adjusting to new environments but typically recovers well with stable conditions.
Care Tips:
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting enhances coloration and leaf texture.
Substrate: Requires nutrient-rich substrate; root tabs are recommended in inert substrates.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 72°F–82°F
pH: 6.5–7.5
Hardness: Medium to hard water preferred
Tank Size: Best suited for aquariums 30 gallons or larger due to its size.
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate once established.
Maintenance: Remove old or melted leaves; provide consistent lighting and nutrients.
Cryptocoryne usteriana is a bold and rewarding addition to larger aquariums. Its distinctive texture and stature make it ideal as a background focal point or a lush backdrop to other plants and hardscape elements.
