Cryptocoryne spiralis: A Graceful, Upright Crypt for Natural Background Planting
Description:
Cryptocoryne spiralis is a classic, elegant species from the Cryptocoryne family, prized for its long, narrow, upright leaves that gently spiral or wave—creating a flowing, natural look in planted aquariums. Native to India, this hardy aquatic plant is one of the oldest-known Crypts in the hobby and remains a favorite for aquascapers seeking height, structure, and movement in their layouts.
Mature plants can grow 12–18 inches tall, making C. spiralis an ideal background or corner plant in medium to large tanks. The leaf coloration ranges from bright green to reddish-brown, depending on lighting, nutrients, and environmental conditions. It performs best in nutrient-rich substrate with moderate to high lighting, although it’s adaptable and thrives in low-tech setups with minimal care.
Cryptocoryne spiralis is known for its reliability and classic crypt appearance. Like other members of the genus, it may experience a short “crypt melt” period after planting, but once established, it sends out runners to form lush colonies.
Care Tips:
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting brings out reddish and bronze tones.
Substrate: Rich substrate recommended; use root tabs if needed.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 72°F–82°F
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Tank Size: Best for tanks 20 gallons or larger due to height.
Growth Rate: Moderate once established.
Maintenance: Trim melting or older leaves; stable water conditions are key.
Cryptocoryne spiralis adds height, structure, and elegance to freshwater aquascapes. Its upright, flowing leaves are perfect for softening hardscape lines and providing shelter for fish and shrimp in planted tank environments.
