Description
Bucephalandra Velvet for Sale — Soft Velvety Texture and a Striking Color Journey
If you’ve been searching for Bucephalandra Velvet for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows this beautiful Bucephalandra variety right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Bucephalandra Velvet is prized for its soft, velvety-textured leaves and rich, deep coloration that genuinely changes as each leaf matures — young leaves emerge in light brown-red tones before gradually deepening into a sophisticated brownish-green as they age, creating a constant visual journey on every new flush of growth. Native to the shaded, fast-flowing streams of Borneo, this slow-growing epiphyte develops elegant, elongated leaves that may also display hints of blue and purple depending on lighting and water conditions. Bucephalandra Velvet for sale at Quinn’s Fins is available bare root (SKU 6142-1, $8.99) or in a 2″ pot (SKU 6142-2, $10.99).
Key Features of Bucephalandra Velvet
- Soft, velvety leaf texture — a distinctly smooth, refined surface quality among Buce varieties
- Color journey from light brown-red to deep brownish-green as leaves mature — ongoing visual interest with every new leaf
- Hints of blue and purple under certain lighting and water conditions
- Dense, elegant growth habit — pairs beautifully with Anubias, Java Fern, and fine-leaved stem plants like Rotala
- Provides shelter and grazing surfaces for shrimp and small fish
- Absorbs excess nutrients, helping control algae growth
- Low light tolerant; beginner-friendly despite its refined appearance
Growing Bucephalandra Velvet — Care at a Glance
Never Bury the Rhizome
Attach Velvet to driftwood or rocks — never bury the rhizome in substrate, which causes rot and melt. Use super glue gel or thread for attachment.
Water Flow
Moderate to strong water flow helps mimic the plant’s natural fast-flowing stream environment, keeping leaves clean and free from debris buildup.
Color Development
Regular fertilization supports growth and helps bring out the deeper, more vibrant tones characteristic of mature Velvet foliage. The young-to-mature color transition is entirely normal and one of the plant’s most distinctive ornamental qualities — do not mistake the reddish new growth for a health issue.
Leaf Melt — Normal on Introduction
As with all Bucephalandra, leaf melt after introduction to a new tank is a normal transition response. Avoid drastic parameter changes, which Velvet tolerates poorly. As long as the rhizome remains firm, new growth will follow.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 70–82°F (21–28°C)
- pH: 6.0–8.0
- CO2: Not required; enhances growth and color
- Light: Low to medium
