Bog Lily for Sale — Spectacular Native White Blooms for Pond Margins and Wet Gardens
If you’ve been searching for bog lily for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Crinum americanum — commonly known as Swamp Lily, Seven Sisters, String Lily, or Florida Swamp Lily — right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. This extraordinary native bulbous perennial is one of the most dramatic flowering plants available for permanently wet pond margins, bog gardens, and rain gardens. From late spring through fall — and into October in consistently wet conditions — clusters of 2 to 6 enormous white starburst flowers rise above bold strap-like evergreen foliage on tall leafless stems. Each individual flower features 6 long, highly dissected white petals radiating from a central cup, adorned with remarkably long purple stamens that complete a look that is exotic, elegant, and unmistakably southern. The fragrance intensifies after dark, attracting moths for night pollination — a unique feature that extends the plant’s appeal well into the evening hours at the pond edge. Bog lily for sale at Quinn’s Fins arrives in a 2″ pot, nursery-grown and ready to establish in your pond margin or bog garden.

Growing Bog Lily — Care at a Glance
Light
Bog lily performs best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun produces the strongest growth and most prolific blooming. In its native habitat it is often found in partial shade along stream banks and pond margins — making it one of the more shade-tolerant large-flowering pond marginals available.
Water & Soil
Bog lily is a true wet-conditions specialist. For best performance and the longest bloom season, plant in a permanently wet or boggy location — constantly wet ditches, pond margins, rain gardens, and pond spillways are ideal. It tolerates water up to 1 inch over the crown. In consistently wet conditions blooming continues into October; in drier settings the bloom season is shorter and less prolific. It prefers slightly acidic, organically rich, loamy soil. Outside permanently wet settings, plant in moist garden soil with consistent irrigation and mulch heavily to retain moisture.
Hardiness & Overwintering
Bog lily is hardy in USDA Zones 7–11. In Zones 7–8, apply a deep winter mulch over the bulbs for protection. In Zones 6 and colder, lift bulbs before the first hard frost and store indoors in a cool, dry location (50°F) through winter, replanting in spring after last frost. In Zones 9–11 the plant remains evergreen and can stay in place year-round.
Critical: Do Not Disturb After Planting
This is the most important care instruction for bog lily: once planted, do not move or disturb the bulbs. Crinum americanum takes 1 to 3 years to reach mature blooming form after initial planting — this timeline resets completely if the bulbs are dug up and replanted. Choose a permanent location, plant once, and allow the plant to establish undisturbed. Patience in the first season produces spectacular long-term results.
Maintenance
Bog lily is low maintenance once established. Remove spent flower stalks after blooming. Do not cut back the strap-like foliage — it remains green and functional year-round and provides ongoing photosynthesis that supports bulb development. Divide clumps only when absolutely necessary (overcrowding or container bound) and only in spring, accepting the associated bloom delay. Fertilize 2–3 times annually with a balanced slow-release fertilizer for best performance.
A Note on Toxicity
All parts of Crinum americanum — including the bulb, leaves, and flowers — are mildly toxic if ingested. Keep away from children and pets. Fish are unlikely to consume this plant and generally leave it undisturbed. Do not confuse with Crinum asiaticum (Asian Poison Bulb), which is significantly more toxic and invasive — C. americanum is a native North American species and is the safe, appropriate choice for US ponds and water gardens.
Shipping Restriction Notice
Bog lily cannot be shipped to Arizona or California due to state agricultural regulations. Please verify your eligibility before purchasing.
