Description
Anubias Hastifolia for Sale — The Most Dramatic Large-Leaf Anubias for Aquarium Backgrounds
If you’ve been searching for Anubias Hastifolia for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Anubias hastifolia — commonly known as Spear Leaf Anubias or Hastifolia — right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Among the largest species in the entire Anubias genus, Anubias Hastifolia is a plant that commands immediate attention in any aquarium setting. Its exceptionally tall stalks rise up to 16 inches above the substrate, each one topped with a large, bold arrowhead and spear-shaped leaf that can reach 10 inches in length — creating a dramatic, architectural background presence that smaller Anubias species simply cannot approach. Each leaf is thick, dark green, and leathery with prominent venation that catches light beautifully, and the plant spreads its rhizome horizontally across hardscape over time, building an increasingly impressive display with each new leaf. All of this with the same low-light, no-CO2, cichlid-safe, shrimp-safe hardiness that makes the entire Anubias genus so universally valued. Anubias Hastifolia for sale at Quinn’s Fins is available in three formats — bare root (SKU 439-1, $8.74), 2″ pot (SKU 439-2, $12.74), and pre-mounted on Malaysian driftwood (SKU 439-3, $39.99).
Why Anubias Hastifolia for Sale Is the Premier Background Anubias
Most Anubias species are foreground and midground plants — compact, low-growing, and suited to smaller-scale placement. Anubias Hastifolia is fundamentally different. It is a background specimen plant that delivers dramatic vertical scale and bold leaf architecture that no other Anubias can replicate.
- Among the largest Anubias species available — stalks up to 16″ tall with spear-shaped leaves reaching 10″ in length
- Distinctive arrowhead and spear-shaped leaf form — a bold, dramatic silhouette unlike any other Anubias variety
- Spreads horizontally via rhizome — gradually colonizes driftwood and hardscape creating an increasingly impressive display
- Low light tolerant — thrives without high-output lighting or specialized equipment
- No CO2 injection required — performs excellently in low-tech and beginner setups
- Compatible with cichlids, goldfish, and rough fish — extremely tough leathery leaves resist damage effectively
- Shrimp and invertebrate safe — broad leaf surfaces provide excellent resting and grazing areas
- Available pre-mounted on Malaysian driftwood — the most visually complete and ready-to-place format
Choose Your Anubias Hastifolia for Sale Format
Anubias Hastifolia for sale at Quinn’s Fins is available in three formats:
- Bare Root (SKU 439-1) — $8.74: A healthy rhizome with large spear-shaped leaves and roots, shipped without substrate. The most economical option for aquarists who want to position and attach the plant to their own chosen hardscape. Attach to driftwood or rocks using fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe super glue gel. Rinse thoroughly before placing in the aquarium.
- 2″ Pot (SKU 439-2) — $12.74: Nursery-grown in a 2″ pot with established root structure. Remove the plant and all growing media — including any rockwool or cotton — before placing in the aquarium. Never put the pot or media in the tank. Attach rhizome to hardscape after removal. Rinse thoroughly.
- On Malaysian Driftwood (SKU 439-3) — $39.99: Anubias Hastifolia mounted on a natural piece of Malaysian driftwood — the most visually complete and aquascape-ready format. Malaysian driftwood sinks immediately without soaking, releases beneficial tannins, and provides a natural hardscape base that perfectly showcases Hastifolia’s dramatic tall spear-like leaves rising above the wood. Simply place directly in your aquarium for an instant, established, large-scale centerpiece. No planting, no gluing, no waiting.
Growing Anubias Hastifolia — Care at a Glance
Never Bury the Rhizome
Never bury the rhizome — the thick horizontal stem from which all leaves and roots emerge — in substrate. A buried rhizome will rot and kill the plant. Anubias Hastifolia is an epiphyte — always keep the rhizome fully exposed on the surface of hardscape. Note that Hastifolia’s rhizome and roots are thick and well-developed compared to smaller Anubias varieties — choose your placement carefully before attaching, as repositioning once established is more difficult.
Light
Anubias Hastifolia thrives in low to moderate lighting. Avoid placing directly under intense high-output lighting without CO2 supplementation — Anubias leaves are slow-growing and susceptible to algae colonization under excessive light. Position in the middle to back of the tank under the natural canopy of floating plants or taller stem plants for optimal results. Amano shrimp are highly effective at controlling leaf algae without damaging the plant.
Placement
Anubias Hastifolia is a background plant due to its impressive size at maturity — stalks reaching 16 inches need room to develop fully and be appreciated from the front viewing angle. Position the driftwood or hardscape mount at the mid-to-back area of the aquarium. The plant will continue to root, spread, and produce new leaves along the rhizome over time, building an increasingly impressive display.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard — extremely adaptable
- Flow: Low to moderate
CO2 & Fertilization
CO2 injection is not required. Regular liquid fertilizer — particularly iron and micronutrients — supports healthy new leaf production and maintains the deep green color and bold leaf form. In established fish tanks, the bioload typically provides sufficient nutrients. Anubias Hastifolia’s large leaves benefit particularly from consistent iron levels — iron deficiency appears as pale, washed-out leaf color.
Growth Rate & Longevity
Anubias Hastifolia is slow-growing — fewer leaves per plant than smaller Anubias species, with each leaf taking longer to develop due to its larger size. This is entirely characteristic of large-leaved Anubias species and is not a sign of poor health. Each new leaf is a statement piece. Well-maintained specimens are extraordinarily long-lived and become increasingly impressive over years of establishment.
Propagation
Propagate by dividing the rhizome with sharp, clean scissors or a blade. Each division must contain at least 3–4 healthy leaves and a section of rhizome with roots. Attach divisions to new hardscape. The thick rhizome of Hastifolia requires a sharp, decisive cut — use a clean blade and make a confident single cut rather than sawing.
About Malaysian Driftwood
Malaysian driftwood sinks immediately without soaking, releases tannins that create beneficial blackwater chemistry, and provides a permanent mounting surface for Anubias Hastifolia’s rhizome to grip and expand across over time. Each piece is unique in natural form. The combination of Hastifolia’s dramatic tall spear leaves rising from natural driftwood creates one of the most visually powerful hardscape-plant combinations available for freshwater aquariums.
