Anubias Nancon (Anubias ‘Nancon’)

Price range: $8.74 through $12.74

Anubias Nancon (Anubias ‘Nancon’) is a collectible hybrid cultivar developed by aquarist Bob Gasser — a cross between Anubias barteri ‘Nana’ and Anubias afzelii ‘Congensis’ producing narrow, pointed, spade-like dark green leaves up to 4 inches long on a compact, low-growing rhizome. It combines the compact growth habit and bulletproof hardiness of Nana with the elongated pointed leaf form of Congensis — delivering a uniquely refined midground plant with genuine collector appeal and beginner-friendly care. Low light, no CO2, epiphytic. Available in a 2″ pot (SKU 6122-1, $12.74) or bare root (SKU 6122-2, $8.74). Nursery-grown at Quinn’s Fins.

Description

Anubias Nancon for Sale — The Bob Gasser Hybrid With Narrow Pointed Leaves and Collector Appeal

If you’ve been searching for Anubias Nancon for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Anubias ‘Nancon’ right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Anubias Nancon is a cultivated hybrid Anubias with a genuine collector pedigree — developed by aquarist Bob Gasser through a deliberate cross between Anubias barteri ‘Nana’ and Anubias afzelii ‘Congensis’, and maintained through careful nursery propagation since its introduction. The result of this cross is a plant with a distinctly refined visual character — narrow, pointed, spade-like dark green leaves up to 4 inches long that are longer and more angular than the rounded leaves of standard Nana, yet more compact and bushy in overall growth habit than the tall vertical growth of Congensis. Anubias Nancon for sale at Quinn’s Fins carries all the bulletproof hardiness the Anubias genus is known for — low to moderate light, no CO2 required, wide pH tolerance, and epiphytic attachment to driftwood and hardscape — in a leaf form that is genuinely distinct from every other Anubias variety in our collection. Available in a 2″ pot (SKU 6122-1, $12.74) or bare root (SKU 6122-2, $8.74).

Why Anubias Nancon for Sale Is a Standout Midground Anubias

Anubias Nancon occupies a precise and valuable niche in the Anubias lineup — sitting between the compact rounded Nana and the tall vertical Congensis in both leaf size and growth habit, with a pointed spade-like leaf form that neither parent replicates independently.

  • Narrow pointed spade-like dark green leaves up to 4″ long — a leaf form distinct from every other Anubias variety
  • Compact growth habit from the Nana parent — stays manageable and bushy rather than growing tall and vertical like Congensis alone
  • Bob Gasser hybrid — same breeder responsible for Anubias Nangi; a collectible cultivar with genuine aquarium hobby provenance
  • Excellent for blackwater and biotope aquariums — the pointed leaf form integrates naturally with driftwood, seed pods, and botanical method setups
  • Low light tolerant — thrives without high-output lighting or specialized equipment
  • No CO2 injection required — performs excellently in low-tech setups
  • Wide pH tolerance (6.0–8.0) — adaptable to soft, neutral, and moderately alkaline water conditions
  • Resists grazing from most fish — tough leathery leaves deter herbivorous fish except Panaque plecos

Growing Anubias Nancon — Care at a Glance

Never Bury the Rhizome

Never bury the rhizome — the thick horizontal stem from which all leaves and roots emerge — in substrate. A buried rhizome will rot and kill the plant. Anubias Nancon is an epiphyte — always keep the rhizome fully exposed on the surface of hardscape. Attach to driftwood, rocks, or hardscape using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe super glue gel. Roots will naturally grip the surface within several weeks.

Light

Anubias Nancon thrives in low to moderate lighting — one of its greatest practical advantages. Avoid intense direct lighting — slow-growing Anubias leaves are prone to algae colonization under excessive illumination without CO2 supplementation. Position under floating plants or taller stem plants for natural algae shading. Amano shrimp are highly effective at controlling algae on Anubias leaves without harming the plant.

Blackwater and Biotope Use

Anubias Nancon is particularly well-suited for blackwater, botanical method, and biotope aquariums. Its pointed leaf form and compact growth integrate naturally with the textures of driftwood, catappa leaves, seed pods, and other botanical elements — blurring the lines between hardscape and plants in a way that creates a genuinely naturalistic aquascape. It thrives in tannin-rich water conditions typical of blackwater setups without any modification to care.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
  • pH: 6.0–8.0 — wide tolerance adaptable to most freshwater setups
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
  • Flow: Low to moderate

CO2 & Fertilization

CO2 injection is not required and does not significantly benefit this plant. Regular liquid fertilizer — particularly iron and micronutrients — supports healthy new leaf production and maintains the deep green color of the pointed leaves. In established fish tanks, the bioload typically provides sufficient nutrients without additional dosing.

Growth Rate and Patience

Anubias Nancon is a slow grower — one new leaf every 4–6 weeks under typical conditions. This slow growth means very low maintenance, no trimming requirement, and consistent visual appearance over extended periods. The compact rhizome gradually branches and builds impressive dense clusters on hardscape over time — becoming more beautiful with each passing month.

Propagation

Propagate by dividing the rhizome with sharp, clean scissors. Each division must contain at least 3–4 leaves and a section of rhizome with roots. Attach divisions to new hardscape. The compact growth habit of Nancon means rhizome divisions are small and manageable — easier to work with than the larger rhizomes of Hastifolia or Congensis.
