Variegated Japanese Iris for Sale — Striking Cream and Green Foliage With Vivid Purple Blooms

If you’ve been searching for variegated Japanese iris for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Iris kaempferi ‘Variegata’ right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. This exceptional cultivar of Japanese iris delivers two completely distinct seasons of ornamental value in a single compact plant. Its sword-like leaves — boldly striped lengthwise in creamy white and rich green — fan outward in a dense, upright clump that provides high-contrast foliage interest from spring through fall, long before and long after the bloom period. In early to mid-spring (earlier than the standard form in most zones), vivid purple blooms with distinctive bright yellow signals rise above the variegated foliage, adding a spectacular seasonal color accent to the already striking leaf display. Variegated Japanese iris for sale at Quinn’s Fins arrives in a 2″ pot, nursery-grown and ready to establish at your pond edge or in a bog garden.

Why Variegated Japanese Iris Stands Apart From the Standard Form

Both forms of Japanese iris are exceptional. The variegated ‘Variegata’ cultivar earns its premium through one decisive advantage: its cream and green striped foliage is ornamental every day of the growing season, not just during the bloom period.

  • Bold cream and green striped sword-like foliage — striking year-round visual presence independent of bloom status
  • Vivid purple blooms with bright yellow signals — spectacular seasonal color accent above the variegated leaves
  • More compact at 18″ — ideal for smaller ponds, container water gardens, and foreground pond plantings
  • Earlier blooming than the standard form — flowers appear in early to mid-spring depending on zone
  • Variegated foliage stays attractive all summer — outstanding design value across the full growing season
  • Hardy in Zones 4–9 — reliably perennial across a wide range of climates
  • Deer resistant — foliage is unpalatable to browsing animals
  • Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds — strong pollinator value during the bloom period

Growing Variegated Japanese Iris — Care at a Glance

Light

Variegated Japanese iris blooms best in full sun. The cream and green foliage variegation is most crisp and contrasting in moderate light — in intense full sun in very hot climates, some afternoon shade helps prevent foliage bleaching while still supporting strong bloom production.

Water, Soil & Critical Planting Note

Like the standard form, variegated Japanese iris prefers consistently moist to wet, acidic, humus-rich soil at the pond margin or in a bog garden. Do not submerge the crown in standing water — plant in moist boggy soil with the crown just at or slightly below the soil surface. Dig a planting hole twice the size of the rhizome, amend with compost, and place the rhizome pointed-side up with roots facing downward, keeping the crown approximately 1 inch below the soil surface.

Soil pH

Variegated Japanese iris shares the standard form’s strong preference for acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). Amend with sulfur or acidifying fertilizer if soil pH is above neutral. Avoid lime or alkaline amendments near plantings.

Hardiness & Overwintering

Variegated Japanese iris is hardy in USDA Zones 4–9. Established plants die back in winter and return reliably from the rhizome each spring. In Zones 4–5, a light mulch layer over the crown through winter provides added protection for the variegated cultivar.

Bloom & Maintenance

Deadhead spent flowers to keep plants tidy and encourage the plant to focus energy on rhizome and foliage development after blooming. The variegated foliage remains attractive through the full growing season — do not cut back aggressively after blooming. Divide established clumps every 2–3 years in early autumn to maintain vigor and bloom production. Replant divisions immediately in freshly amended acidic soil.

Toxicity Note

All parts of Iris kaempferi ‘Variegata’ are mildly toxic and irritating to skin and eyes. Keep away from children and pets. Wear gloves when handling rhizomes and wash hands thoroughly after planting or dividing.
