Their classic floating blooms and broad, leathery round pads create the quintessential water garden look that has defined beautiful ponds for generations. Why Hardy Water Lily Outperforms Tropicals for Long-Term Pond Keepers

Hardy and tropical water lilies each have their strengths. For pond keepers who want a plant that goes in once and comes back every year without intervention, the hardy water lily is the clear choice.

  • Hardy in Zones 3–11 — overwinters right in the pond in most climates with no lifting or indoor storage required
  • Blooms May through first frost — one of the longest bloom seasons of any perennial pond plant
  • Returns reliably year after year from the rhizome root system — a true long-lived perennial investment
  • Classic floating blooms and broad round pads — the iconic water garden look that never goes out of style
  • Flowers open in the morning and close in the late afternoon — a reliable daily display all season
  • Provides fish cover, algae suppression, and water temperature regulation — functional pond benefits alongside beauty
  • Thick, leathery pads resist wind and light surface disturbance better than tropical lily pads
  • No minimum water temperature requirement — can be set out earlier in spring than tropical varieties

Choose Your Color

Hardy water lilies are available in six colors, each sold separately at $24.99 bare root:

  • Changeable (SKU 6090-1): One of the most fascinating color options in the water garden — changeable varieties shift color over their 3 to 4-day bloom cycle, typically opening yellow or apricot and deepening to peach, pink, or copper-red as the flower matures. No two days look exactly the same.
  • Peach (SKU 6090-2): Soft, warm peach blooms with golden centers — a refined, subtle color that bridges yellow and pink beautifully. One of the most elegant and underplanted color options in the hardy lily palette.
  • Pink (SKU 6090-3): The classic hardy lily color — soft to vivid pink blooms with golden yellow stamens floating among deep green pads. A reliable, prolific bloomer and one of the most popular colors in the category.
  • Red (SKU 6090-4): Bold, saturated red to deep crimson blooms that create a dramatic focal point at the pond center. Hardy red lilies are among the most striking color statements available for the water garden.
  • White (SKU 6090-5): Pure white blooms with golden yellow centers — crisp, luminous, and timeless. White hardy lilies provide the most contrast against dark water and green pads, and glow beautifully in late afternoon light.
  • Yellow (SKU 6090-6): Cheerful, bright yellow blooms held on or just above the water surface. Yellow hardy lilies bring warmth and energy to the pond palette and pair beautifully with pink and white varieties in multi-lily plantings.

Growing Hardy Water Lily — Care at a Glance

Light

Hardy water lilies perform best in full sun — a minimum of 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. More sun produces more blooms. In part shade (3–4 hours), foliage will grow but flower production will be significantly reduced. Position away from fountains, waterfalls, and moving water — still water conditions produce the best blooming results.

Planting

Plant bare root hardy water lilies in a wide, shallow container — 12 to 20 inches in diameter and 8 to 10 inches deep — using heavy loam or clay soil only. Never use bagged potting soil or compost-containing mixes, which break down underwater, cloud the water, and cause crown rot. Place the rhizome at a 45-degree angle with the growing tip pointing upward and resting just above the soil surface. Cover the soil with a thin layer of pea gravel or sand to prevent soil disturbance — do not bury the growing tip. Begin at an initial depth of 6 inches below the water surface and gradually lower to the desired mature depth as the plant establishes.

Water Depth

Hardy water lilies are adaptable to a wide range of water depths. Miniature and dwarf varieties thrive at 6–12 inches. Medium varieties perform best at 12–24 inches. Large varieties can be placed at 18–48 inches at maturity. Deeper planting provides more insulation in winter but slows spring emergence — a worthwhile trade-off in cold climates.

Fertilizing

Fertilize hardy water lilies once per month during the growing season using aquatic water lily fertilizer tablets pushed firmly into the container soil near the rhizome. Stop fertilizing in late summer to signal the plant to prepare for winter dormancy. Consistent monthly feeding through the active growing season is the single biggest factor in bloom frequency and flower size.

Hardiness & Overwintering

Hardy water lilies are perennial in USDA Zones 3–11 — one of the widest hardiness ranges of any flowering aquatic plant. The key to successful overwintering is keeping the rhizome below the freeze line. In ponds deeper than 24 inches, simply move the container to the deepest section of the pond before freeze-up. In shallower ponds in cold climates, lift the container and store it indoors in a cool, dark location submerged in a bucket of water, or bury the pot below the frost line in a garden trench. In Zones 7–11, no special overwintering care is needed — leave the plant in place.

Bloom & Maintenance

Hardy lily flowers open in the morning and close in the late afternoon, with each individual bloom lasting 3 to 5 days. Remove spent blooms by following the stem to its base and cutting or snapping it off — this encourages continuous new flower production. Remove yellowing leaves regularly to maintain water clarity. Divide established rhizomes every 2–3 years in spring to maintain vigor and control size.

Hardy vs. Tropical Water Lily — Which Is Right for You?

Hardy water lilies are the better choice if you want a permanent, year-round pond plant that overwinters in place and returns every spring. Tropical water lilies offer larger blooms, stronger fragrance, more prolific flowering, and the exclusive blue and purple color range — but require overwintering care in most climates. Many pond keepers grow both. Browse our Day-Blooming Tropical Water Lilies and Night-Blooming Tropical Water Lilies to complete your pond lily collection.
