Water Hyacinth for Sale — Spectacular Lavender Blooms and Exceptional Pond Filtration in One True Floating Plant

If you’ve been searching for Water Hyacinth for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Eichhornia crassipes right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Water Hyacinth is one of the most visually spectacular and functionally impressive true floating pond plants available for water gardens — a native of the Amazon basin of South America that has become one of the world’s most recognized aquatic plants for both its extraordinary ornamental beauty and its remarkable biological filtration capacity. Its large, rounded, glossy bright to dark green leaves form an attractive floating rosette supported by distinctively inflated, spongy, bulbous petioles filled with air-cell tissue that provide the plant its buoyancy — no substrate, no container, and no planting required. Below the water surface, dense, feathery deep purple root systems trail downward into the water column, actively absorbing excess phosphate, nitrogen, heavy metals, and toxins from pond water at a rate that few other aquatic plants can match. And above the foliage, in summer, tall spikes of pale lavender to violet flowers rise dramatically above the rosette — each with a distinctive yellow dot on the upper petal — creating one of the most beautiful flowering displays of any pond plant. Water Hyacinth for sale at Quinn’s Fins ships bare root (SKU 6126-1, $7.99) ready to place directly on your pond surface.

Why Water Hyacinth for Sale Is the Premier Floating Pond Plant

Water Hyacinth combines spectacular ornamental performance with genuine, measurable pond water quality improvement in a single plant that requires absolutely no effort to establish — simply place it on the water surface and it begins working immediately.

  • True floater — no substrate, no container, no planting required; place directly on the pond surface
  • Spectacular lavender to violet flower spikes — among the most beautiful flowers of any floating pond plant
  • Distinctively inflated spongy bulbous petioles — the unique floating structure that gives Water Hyacinth its characteristic silhouette
  • Dense feathery deep purple root system — visually striking from below; highly effective biological filter
  • Exceptional nutrient absorber — actively removes phosphate, nitrogen, heavy metals, and toxins from pond water
  • Rapid surface coverage — fast-spreading daughter plants provide shade that suppresses algae growth
  • Excellent fish and fry shelter — dense root masses provide perfect hiding and spawning habitat for koi, goldfish, and pond fish
  • No substrate required — the ultimate low-maintenance pond plant; zero setup effort

Growing Water Hyacinth — Care at a Glance

Placement — True Floating Plant

Water Hyacinth is a true floating plant — simply place it on the pond surface and it will establish and spread on its own. No container, no soil, no planting depth to manage. It performs best when allowed to float freely across the pond surface. For the most prolific flowering, position in the area of the pond that receives the most direct sun exposure throughout the day.

Light

Water Hyacinth requires full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for vigorous growth and prolific flowering. In partial shade, the plant grows more slowly and flowers less prolifically. In full shade, the plant declines. Full sun is essential for best performance.

Water Parameters and Temperature

  • Temperature: 65–90°F (18–32°C) — thrives in warm weather; declines in cold
  • pH: 6.0–8.0 — adaptable across a wide range
  • Water Quality: Performs in a wide range of water quality conditions; actually improves water quality as it grows
  • Flow: Still to gently moving water — strong water movement prevents proper floating position

Spreading and Management

Water Hyacinth spreads rapidly by producing daughter plants connected by short runners — a colony can double in size every 6–18 days under ideal warm conditions. Do not allow Water Hyacinth to cover more than 50–60% of the pond surface. Excessive surface coverage blocks oxygen exchange, reduces light penetration to submerged plants, and can stress fish. Remove excess plants regularly during peak growing season. Never dispose of Water Hyacinth in natural waterways, drainage ditches, or any body of water connected to natural waterways. Always compost or dispose of removed plant material in the trash.

Fertilization

Water Hyacinth requires no additional fertilization in established fish ponds — it draws its nutrition directly from the nutrients already present in pond water. In clean, low-nutrient water features without fish, the plant grows more slowly and may benefit from dilute liquid aquatic fertilizer. In heavily stocked koi and goldfish ponds, the natural fish waste provides ample nutrition and the plant will grow most vigorously.

Hardiness and Overwintering

Water Hyacinth is hardy in Zones 8–11 and is perennial where winters are mild. In Zones 9–11 it can remain on the pond year-round. In Zone 8, the plant often declines in cool weather but may return from the root mass in spring in sheltered ponds. In cooler zones it is grown as an annual — purchase fresh plants each spring to refresh surface coverage. It can also be overwintered indoors in a greenhouse or heated sunroom in a shallow tub of water under bright grow lights, though this is rarely practical for large quantities.

Flowering

Water Hyacinth produces tall spikes of 8–15 pale lavender to violet flowers — each with a distinctive yellow dot on the upper petal — in summer. Individual flower stalks last 1–2 days but are produced in continuous succession throughout the warm season. Flowering is most prolific in full sun with warm water temperatures. Plants in heavily nutrient-rich water may produce more foliage than flowers — reducing fertilizer input and nitrogen levels can improve flower production.
