Description

Vesuvius Sword for Sale — Dramatically Twisted Spiral Leaves for Any Freshwater Aquascape

If you’ve been searching for Vesuvius Sword for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Echinodorus ‘Vesuvius’ — also known as Helanthium ‘Vesuvius’ — right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Vesuvius Sword is one of the most immediately recognizable and visually striking aquarium plants in the freshwater hobby. Its narrow, grass-like blades grow in dramatically tight spiraling twists that rise from the base of the plant in a unique corkscrew motion, creating an effect that resembles wisps of smoke or lava spiraling upward from the base of Mount Vesuvius — the inspiration behind this cultivar’s unforgettable name. Unlike most sword plants that produce broad, flat leaves in a standard rosette, Vesuvius delivers fine, twisted texture that contrasts beautifully against virtually every other plant in the aquascape. Vesuvius Sword for sale at Quinn’s Fins is available in two formats — bare root (SKU 6101-1, $5.99) and in a 2″ pot (SKU 6101-2, $9.99) — both nursery-grown and ready to plant.

Why Vesuvius Sword for Sale Stands Apart From Every Other Sword Plant

Most sword plants are valued for their bold, broad leaves and large-scale presence. Vesuvius is valued for the opposite — its fine, twisted, spiraling leaf form creates a completely different visual character that makes it an instant focal point and conversation piece in any planted tank.

  • Dramatically twisted spiraling narrow leaves — a completely unique leaf form unlike any other commonly available aquarium plant
  • Creates stunning fine textural contrast against broad-leaved plants, driftwood, and hardscape
  • Compact 10–12″ height — ideal midground to background sizing for tanks of all sizes
  • Beginner-friendly — tolerates a wide range of water conditions and lighting levels without special equipment
  • No CO2 injection required — performs well in low-tech setups
  • Heavy root feeder — develops a substantial root system that anchors firmly in substrate
  • Fast-growing under good conditions — fills in midground areas quickly with striking spiral texture
  • Completely safe for fish, shrimp, snails, and invertebrates — fine leaves provide excellent shelter for fry and small invertebrates

Growing Vesuvius Sword — Care at a Glance

What to Expect After Planting — Emersed Melt

Vesuvius Sword is typically grown emersed (above water) at nurseries — including ours. When first introduced to a submerged aquarium environment, the existing emersed-form leaves will melt away as the plant transitions to its submerged growth form. This is completely normal and expected — not a sign of plant failure. The root system remains healthy below the substrate, and within 2–4 weeks new tightly twisted submersed leaves will begin to emerge. Do not remove the plant during this transition. The dramatically spiraling leaf form that Vesuvius Sword is famous for is its submersed growth — the emersed leaves are wider and less twisted by comparison.

Substrate

Vesuvius Sword is a heavy root feeder — substrate quality directly determines growth rate and vigor. In nutrient-rich aquarium soil, this plant establishes quickly and produces new twisted leaves rapidly. In inert gravel or sand, root tabs placed beneath the plant and refreshed every 2–3 months provide the necessary nutrition. Plant with roots buried and the crown — the central growing point — just at or slightly above the substrate surface. Never bury the crown.

Light

Vesuvius Sword performs best in moderate lighting, where leaf twisting is most pronounced and growth is compact. In higher light, growth accelerates and the spiraling form becomes even more dramatic. In low light, growth slows and leaves may become less tightly twisted and more elongated. At least moderate light is recommended for the most visually distinctive results.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
  • Flow: Low to moderate

CO2 & Fertilization

CO2 injection is not required. Regular liquid fertilizer supplementation — particularly iron — supports healthy green color and vigorous twisted leaf production. Root tabs are the most effective fertilization method for this heavy root feeder and produce the most noticeable improvements in growth rate in established tanks.

Propagation

Vesuvius Sword propagates by producing runners along which daughter plants develop at intervals. Once daughter plants have developed their own leaves and root systems, they can be gently separated and replanted elsewhere in the aquarium. The plant may also produce emersed flower stalks in open-top setups from which adventitious plantlets can be harvested.

Design Use

Vesuvius Sword’s spiraling fine-textured leaf form creates exceptional visual contrast in the aquascape. Use it in the midground alongside broad-leaved plants like Anubias, large-leaved swords, or Cryptocoryne for maximum textural contrast. It pairs equally well with driftwood and stone hardscape, where its twisted leaves create a natural, organic movement effect. In larger tanks it works beautifully as a background accent; in smaller tanks it can serve as a striking midground focal point.

Two Ways to Buy Vesuvius Sword for Sale at Quinn’s Fins

Vesuvius Sword for sale at Quinn’s Fins is available in two formats:

  • Bare Root (SKU 6101-1) — $5.99: A healthy rooted plant shipped without substrate. Trim any damaged roots before planting, rinse thoroughly, and plant directly into your aquarium substrate. Emersed leaves will melt — new submersed twisted leaves will emerge within 2–4 weeks.
  • 2″ Pot (SKU 6101-2) — $9.99: Nursery-grown in a 2″ pot with established root structure. Remove the plant from the pot and all growing media before planting. Never place the pot or growing media directly in the aquarium. Rinse roots thoroughly after removal. Emersed leaves will melt — new submersed twisted leaves will emerge within 2–4 weeks.

Echinodorus FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Echinodorus (Sword Plants)

Q: What is an Echinodorus plant?
A: Echinodorus, commonly known as sword plants, are a popular genus of aquatic plants used in freshwater aquariums. Known for their rosette growth and long, sword-shaped leaves, they are ideal for midground or background planting and thrive in a wide range of tank setups.

Q: Are Echinodorus plants easy to grow?
A: Yes, most Echinodorus species are beginner-friendly and very hardy. They adapt well to a variety of water conditions and do not require CO₂ injection, although they respond positively to it.

Q: How big do sword plants get?
A: Depending on the species, Echinodorus plants can range from 6 inches to over 20 inches in height. Larger varieties like Echinodorus bleheri or Echinodorus ‘Altlandsberg’ make excellent background or centerpiece plants in tanks 20 gallons or larger.

Q: Do sword plants need substrate fertilizer?
A: Yes. Echinodorus are heavy root feeders, and while they can grow in plain gravel, they perform best in nutrient-rich substrate or when supplemented with root tabs.

Q: Can I grow Echinodorus in low-tech tanks?
A: Absolutely. Sword plants thrive in low-tech aquariums with moderate lighting and stable water parameters. They don’t require high light or CO₂ to survive but will grow more vigorously if provided.

Q: Do Echinodorus plants flower?
A: Yes, some Echinodorus species may produce emersed flowers under the right conditions, especially in open-top tanks or shallow setups. These stalks can also produce adventitious plantlets for propagation.

Q: How do I propagate Echinodorus?
A: Echinodorus plants propagate by sending out flower stalks with baby plants or “runners.” Once these plantlets develop roots and a few leaves, they can be gently removed and replanted.

Q: Are Echinodorus plants safe for fish and shrimp?
A: Yes, Echinodorus are completely safe for all freshwater fish, snails, and shrimp. Their broad leaves provide excellent cover and grazing surfaces for shrimp and fry.

Q: Why are the leaves turning yellow or transparent?
A: Yellowing or transparent leaves are often signs of nutrient deficiencies, especially a lack of iron or potassium. Make sure the plant is receiving adequate lighting and root fertilization.

Q: Can sword plants be used in outdoor ponds?
A: Some hardy Echinodorus species can be grown in temperate or tropical outdoor ponds, provided temperatures don’t drop too low. They may also transition to emersed growth when exposed to air.
