Sensitive Plant (Neptunia aquatica) — also known as Water Mimosa or Aquatic Sensitive Plant — is one of the most interactive and conversation-starting pond plants available. Its feathery mimosa-like leaves fold inward instantly when touched and reopen minutes later, and also close naturally at night and reopen with the morning sun. The floating stems are enclosed in remarkable white spongy closed-cell foam tissue that serves as a natural flotation device. Small tufted yellow puffball flowers appear in summer. Fascinating for children and adults alike. Zones 9–11. Single stem — $7.99.

Sensitive Plant for Sale — The Interactive Aquatic Plant Whose Leaves Fold When Touched

If you’ve been searching for Sensitive Plant for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Neptunia aquatica — commonly known as Sensitive Plant, Water Mimosa, or Aquatic Sensitive Plant — right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Sensitive Plant is one of the most fascinating, interactive, and genuinely surprising plants in the entire pond plant world — a floating aquatic plant that triggers instant, visible leaf movement in response to touch. Run a finger along its feathery mimosa-like leaflets and they fold inward immediately, one by one in a chain reaction down the stem, closing up as if startled — then slowly reopening over the next few minutes as the plant recovers. This remarkable touch-response behavior — called thigmonasty — combined with the plant’s equally remarkable construction makes Neptunia aquatica unlike anything else in the water garden. Its floating stems are enclosed in white, spongy, closed-cell foam tissue that the plant produces as a natural biological flotation device — looking remarkably like soft white vienna sausages strung along the stem — a structure found in virtually no other common pond plant. Small tufted yellow puffball flowers appear throughout the warm season above the floating foliage. Sensitive Plant for sale at Quinn’s Fins ships as a single stem (SKU 6127-1, $7.99) ready to float on your pond surface.

Why Sensitive Plant for Sale Is the Most Interactive Plant in the Water Garden

Sensitive Plant occupies a completely unique category in the pond plant world — it is not primarily grown for its flowers or foliage, but for the living behavioral response that makes it endlessly engaging for pond visitors of any age.

  • Leaves fold inward instantly when touched — a chain-reaction thigmonastic response visible in real time; one of the most interactive plant behaviors available in any garden
  • Leaves also close naturally at night and reopen with morning sun — a daily nyctinastic movement cycle that marks the rhythm of the day
  • White spongy closed-cell foam flotation tissue on stems — a biologically produced natural float unlike any other pond plant structure
  • Small tufted yellow puffball flowers in summer — delicate and charming blooms that complement the feathery foliage beautifully
  • Feathery bipinnate mimosa-like leaflets — elegant, refined foliage texture that is attractive even when not performing its touch response
  • Can float freely or root at the pond edge — flexible placement to suit different pond designs
  • Fast-growing in warm weather — spreads quickly via runners to provide meaningful surface coverage
  • Edible in Thai cuisine — stems and leaves are consumed both raw and cooked in traditional Southeast Asian cooking

Growing Sensitive Plant — Care at a Glance

The Touch Response — How It Works

The Sensitive Plant’s leaf-folding response is triggered by mechanical stimulation — touch, vibration, or rapid temperature change causes a rapid change in turgor pressure in specialized cells at the base of each leaflet, causing the leaflets to fold inward within seconds. The plant then gradually restores turgor pressure and the leaves reopen over the next 5–20 minutes depending on ambient temperature. Do not place near waterfalls, fountains, or strong water movement — constant physical stimulation from moving water causes the leaves to stay permanently folded, preventing photosynthesis and weakening the plant over time.

The Floating Stem Structure

The white spongy tissue that encloses the floating stems of Neptunia aquatica is a closed-cell foam produced entirely by the plant as a biological flotation mechanism. This foam develops naturally on stems that grow out over water and disappears on stems forced to grow out of water — then regenerates as soon as those stems reach the water surface again. It is harmless, fascinating, and requires no management.

Placement

Sensitive Plant can be placed in two ways — floating freely on the pond surface, or rooted in soil at the pond edge in up to 12 inches of water. For floating placement, simply place the stem on the water surface in a calm area away from strong current. The white foam provides buoyancy and the plant will establish naturally. For marginal placement, plant at the shallow pond edge in moist soil and allow stems to spread outward across the water surface.

Light

Sensitive Plant performs best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun produces the fastest growth and most prolific flowering. Partial shade is tolerated. Avoid deep shade — insufficient light causes slow, weak growth and reduced flower production.

Water and Temperature

  • Temperature: 65–90°F (18–32°C) — thrives in warm weather; cannot tolerate temperatures below 50°F for more than a few days
  • Water Depth: Floating surface to 12 inches planted at pond edge
  • Flow: Still to gently moving water only — strong current or waterfalls cause leaves to remain closed
  • pH: 6.0–8.0

Spreading and Management

Sensitive Plant grows quickly in warm weather — spreading via runners across the water surface. Trim regularly during peak growing season to prevent dense mat formation that can shade out submerged plants and reduce oxygen exchange. Trim at least twice during the growing season for best management. Never dispose of cuttings in natural waterways.

Hardiness and Overwintering

Sensitive Plant is hardy in Zones 9–11 only and does not tolerate frost. In cooler zones, grow as an annual — purchase fresh plants each spring. It cannot be reliably overwintered outdoors below Zone 9. In Zone 9 and warmer, plants may persist year-round in sheltered ponds during mild winters.
