The Touch Response — How It Works

The Sensitive Plant’s leaf-folding response is triggered by mechanical stimulation — touch, vibration, or rapid temperature change causes a rapid change in turgor pressure in specialized cells at the base of each leaflet, causing the leaflets to fold inward within seconds. The plant then gradually restores turgor pressure and the leaves reopen over the next 5–20 minutes depending on ambient temperature. Do not place near waterfalls, fountains, or strong water movement — constant physical stimulation from moving water causes the leaves to stay permanently folded, preventing photosynthesis and weakening the plant over time.

The Floating Stem Structure

Spreading and Management

Hardiness and Overwintering
