Night Peacock — Aulonocara sp. “Night”
The Night Peacock is a striking Aulonocara variant known for its deep black base color accented with glowing blue highlights. Selectively bred on our Florida farm for vibrant color development and strong overall health, this cichlid makes a bold centerpiece in any African cichlid aquarium.
Appearance
Night Peacocks display dramatic contrast — a dark body with iridescent blue on the face, fins, and flanks. Males show the most intense coloration as they mature, especially in stable water conditions with proper nutrition. Females are more subtle but maintain the breed’s elegant patterning.
Temperament & Compatibility
As with all Aulonocara, the Night Peacock has a moderate temperament: noticeably less aggressive than rock-dwelling Mbuna, yet still territorial, especially during feeding and breeding. They mix well with other Peacock and Hap cichlids of similar size, but avoid keeping them with Mbuna or with species known for excessive aggression.
For groups, a 1 male to 3–4 females ratio reduces pressure on individual females. Males can coexist when kept in a tank with enough space and clear line-of-sight breaks.
Tank Requirements
- Beginners: 75+ gallons recommended for stability and easier aggression management.
- Experienced aquarists: 40–55 gallons for single males or smaller groups with strong filtration.
- Provide open swimming space and stable rockwork for territory boundaries.
- Use bright LEDs to highlight the iridescent blue coloration.
Diet
Feed a high-quality cichlid pellet, supplemented with spirulina, high-protein flakes, and occasional frozen foods such as brine shrimp. Avoid feeding excessive fatty foods like beef heart, which can impact long-term health.
Breeding Behavior
Night Peacocks are maternal mouthbrooders. Females carry eggs and fry in their mouths for several weeks, offering exceptional protection during early development. Provide flat stones or smooth substrate for courtship behavior and keep stress low for successful brooding.
