Night Blooming Tropical Water Lily for Sale — Magic at the Pond After Dark
If you’ve been searching for night blooming tropical water lily for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Nymphaea spp. night-blooming tropical varieties right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. While day-blooming water lilies put on their display for the morning and afternoon crowd, night-blooming tropicals save their performance for the most atmospheric hours of the day. Blooms open as the sun sets — typically around dusk — and remain open through the night and into the following morning, closing as midday approaches. Large, intensely fragrant flowers in rich red, luminous white, or soft pink float on or just above the water surface in the evening light, reflecting beautifully in the still pond surface and releasing their fragrance into the night air. Night blooming tropical water lily for sale at Quinn’s Fins ships bare root at $39.99 — in red (SKU 6089-1), white (SKU 6089-2), or pink (SKU 6089-3).
What Makes Night-Blooming Tropical Water Lily Different
Night-blooming tropical water lilies occupy a completely distinct niche from any other water garden plant. They are not simply day bloomers that stay open late — they are a fundamentally different blooming type with their own seasonal rhythm, fragrance profile, and visual character.
- Opens at dusk — blooms through the night and into the following morning, closing around midday
- Large fragrant blooms on or just above the water surface — a more intimate, floating presentation than day-blooming tropicals
- Transforms the pond into a nocturnal garden — ideal for outdoor evening entertaining and nighttime pond enjoyment
- Rich, sweet nighttime fragrance — particularly intense after dark when other garden scents have faded
- Stunning by moonlight, landscape lighting, or pond lighting — white and pink varieties glow dramatically in low light
- Larger pads than day-blooming varieties — broad, often dramatically ruffled or toothed leaves provide impressive surface coverage
- Available in red, white, and pink — a refined, complementary palette for evening garden design
- Non-toxic to fish and pond wildlife — completely safe for stocked ponds
Choose Your Color
Night-blooming tropical water lilies are available in three colors, each sold separately at $39.99 bare root:
- Red (SKU 6089-1): Deep, saturated crimson to wine-red blooms that read as dramatic and bold even in low evening light. A powerful focal point for the nighttime pond.
- White (SKU 6089-2): Pure white blooms that glow luminously by moonlight and pond lighting — the most visually striking night-blooming color in low-light conditions. An ethereal, unforgettable evening pond experience.
- Pink (SKU 6089-3): Soft to medium pink blooms with a warm, romantic evening presence. The most approachable and versatile of the three night-blooming color options.
Growing Night-Blooming Tropical Water Lily — Care at a Glance
Water Temperature — Critical
Like all tropical water lilies, night-blooming varieties must not be set out until pond water temperature has stabilized at 70°F or warmer. Cold water will stall growth and stress the plant regardless of air temperature. In most climates this means late May through June at the earliest.
Light
Night-blooming tropical water lilies require full sun — a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Despite their nocturnal blooming habit, these plants need daytime sun to fuel the energy required for evening flower production. Position away from waterfalls, fountains, and moving water — still conditions produce the best blooming results.
Planting
Plant bare root night-blooming lilies in a 2 to 7 gallon container using heavy loam soil only — never bagged potting soil or compost-containing mixes, which break down underwater and cause crown rot. Mound soil in the center of the container, place the crown on the mound with roots spreading downward, and add soil to just cover the crown. Keep the growing point exposed. Do not top with gravel or stone. Place at an initial depth of 6 inches below the water surface, lowering gradually to 12–18 inches as the plant establishes.
Fertilizing
Night-blooming tropical lilies are heavy feeders. Fertilize every 2 weeks throughout the growing season with aquatic water lily fertilizer tablets pushed into the container soil. Consistent fertilizing is the single biggest variable in bloom production — do not skip feedings.
Hardiness & Overwintering
Night-blooming tropical water lilies are hardy in USDA Zones 9–11. In cooler zones, treat as a seasonal annual or overwinter the tuber indoors: lift from the container before first frost, remove foliage, and store in a sealed bag or container of damp sand and peat moss at 50–55°F. Replant the following spring once water temperature reaches 70°F.
Bloom & Maintenance
Night-blooming flowers open at dusk and close around midday the following day — each bloom lasting approximately 3–4 days. Remove spent flowers by following the stem to its base and cutting or snapping it off to encourage continuous new bloom production. Remove yellowing leaves regularly. Watch for water lily aphids during the growing season.
