Green Lucky Bamboo for Sale — The Classic Feng Shui Water Plant for Aquariums and Paludariums

If you’ve been searching for Green Lucky Bamboo for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Dracaena sanderiana — commonly known as Lucky Bamboo, Chinese Water Bamboo, Ribbon Plant, Friendship Bamboo, or Water Bamboo — right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Green Lucky Bamboo is one of the most widely recognized and culturally celebrated ornamental plants in the world — not a true bamboo despite its common name, but a slender, elegant member of the Dracaena family native to the tropical rainforests of Cameroon and the Congo in West Africa. Its segmented, bright green bamboo-like stems rise upright with tufts of glossy, lance-shaped leaves at the top, creating a vertical, calming presence that has made it a beloved Feng Shui symbol of good fortune, health, and positive energy for over 4,000 years in Asian culture. In aquarium and paludarium settings, Green Lucky Bamboo performs beautifully with its roots submerged in the water and its stalks and leaves growing freely above the waterline — providing natural vertical accents, excellent fish and shrimp habitat below the surface, and a living decorative element that bridges the aquascape and the space above. RHS Award of Garden Merit recipient.

Growing Green Lucky Bamboo — Care at a Glance

Critical Use Note — Roots Submerged, Stalks Above Water

Green Lucky Bamboo is not a true aquatic plant and cannot be kept fully submerged indefinitely. When completely submerged, the stems and leaves will eventually rot — fouling the water and harming aquarium inhabitants. The correct placement in aquarium and paludarium settings is: roots and the base of the stem submerged in water, with the upper stalks and leaves growing freely above the waterline. In this configuration, Lucky Bamboo can thrive for years, continuously growing and providing vertical interest above and refuge below. It is not suitable for fully planted, sealed, or completely submerged aquascape setups.

Water Placement

Anchor the bare roots in clean pebbles or aquarium gravel with at least 1–2 inches of water covering the root zone. The water level should not rise above the lowest stem node. Change the water every 1–2 weeks in non-aquarium settings to prevent mosquito breeding and algae buildup — in active aquarium setups, the regular water changes and filtration handle this naturally.

Light

Green Lucky Bamboo prefers bright indirect light but adapts well to low-light conditions — an important advantage when the plant is growing above an aquarium where its upper sections receive only ambient room light rather than direct aquarium lighting. Avoid direct sunlight on the leaves, which causes scorching and yellowing. A north or east-facing window position above the aquarium is ideal.

Water Quality

Use chlorine-free water — filtered, distilled, or aged tap water — when keeping Lucky Bamboo in non-aquarium settings. In active freshwater aquariums, the regular water changes and dechlorination that standard aquarium maintenance provides are sufficient. Avoid fluoride in the water, which causes brown leaf tips over time. Aquarium water used to water Lucky Bamboo is beneficial due to its natural nutrient content.

Toxicity Warning

Green Lucky Bamboo is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested — causing vomiting, drooling, depression, and dilated pupils in cats. Keep out of reach of pets. Safe for fish and aquarium inhabitants when used correctly with roots submerged and stalks above water.

Fertilization

Minimal fertilization required. In aquarium settings, fish waste provides natural nutrients to the submerged roots. In non-aquarium water culture settings, apply a very diluted liquid fertilizer (one-tenth strength) every 2–3 months — or simply use small amounts of aquarium water, which provides gentle natural nutrition.

Propagation

Propagate by cutting a healthy stem shoot and placing in clean water — new roots develop within 2–3 weeks. Cuttings from side shoots root most reliably.
