Echinodorus barthii ‘Red Melon’
Description:
Echinodorus barthii ‘Red Melon’, also known simply as the Red Melon Sword, is a stunning aquarium plant known for its rich burgundy to deep red leaves and bold rosette structure. This South American sword plant adds dramatic color and texture to planted freshwater aquariums, making it a favorite centerpiece in aquascaping layouts.
The broad, oval-shaped leaves of Echinodorus barthii ‘Red Melon’ can range from reddish-green to deep maroon, depending on lighting and nutrient levels. Under moderate to high lighting with iron-rich substrate or root tabs, its coloration becomes more intense and saturated. Typically growing 8–16 inches tall, it is best used as a midground to background plant in medium to large tanks.
Despite its exotic appearance, Red Melon Sword is hardy and relatively easy to care for. It adapts well to a variety of water conditions and does not require CO₂ injection, although it will benefit from it in high-tech setups. Like other Echinodorus species, it may produce flower stalks and adventitious plantlets that can be propagated.
Care Tips:
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting brings out the deepest red coloration.
Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs support robust root development and leaf health.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 72°F–82°F
pH: 6.5–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Tank Size: Best for aquariums 20 gallons or larger due to its size and spread.
Growth Rate: Moderate; grows steadily with adequate lighting and nutrients.
Maintenance: Remove older leaves and trim back flower stalks as needed to maintain shape and vigor.
Echinodorus barthii ‘Red Melon’ is a superb choice for aquarists looking to introduce bold red foliage into their aquascape. Its elegant form, rich coloration, and reliable growth make it a standout in any freshwater planted tank.
