Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Tropica’: A Textured, Compact Crypt Perfect for Foreground and Midground
Description:
Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Tropica’ is a select cultivar of the popular C. wendtii species, distinguished by its densely crinkled leaves and compact, bushy growth. Developed by Tropica, a renowned aquatic plant nursery, this variety features rich green to bronze-brown tones depending on lighting and nutrients, adding vibrant texture and contrast to planted aquariums.
Reaching 4–6 inches in height, C. wendtii ‘Tropica’ is ideal for foreground or midground placement in small to medium tanks. Its broad, wavy leaves grow in a tight rosette, creating a full, lush appearance that anchors well in nutrient-rich substrate. Like other crypts, it may experience crypt melt during transitions but rebounds quickly when provided with stable conditions.
This variety thrives in low to moderate light and is very low maintenance, making it perfect for both beginner hobbyists and experienced aquascapers. It pairs beautifully with finer-leaved species and hardscape to create a balanced, natural layout.
Care Tips:
Lighting: Low to moderate; higher light enhances leaf color but not required.
Substrate: Rich substrate is best; use root tabs in inert substrates.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 72°F–82°F
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Tank Size: Suitable for tanks 5 gallons and larger.
Growth Rate: Moderate, slow initially but stable over time.
Maintenance: Trim dead or melting leaves; do not move frequently once planted.
Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Tropica’ is an outstanding choice for aquascapes needing a durable, textured foreground plant. Its compact size, ruffled leaves, and easy-going nature make it a reliable and attractive addition to freshwater tanks.
