Description
Cryptocoryne pontederiifolia: A Broad-Leafed, Easy-Care Crypt for Midground Beauty
Description:
Cryptocoryne pontederiifolia is a striking and reliable aquarium plant known for its broad, paddle-shaped leaves and attractive rosette growth form. Native to Southeast Asia, this crypt is a favorite among aquascapers for its bold midground presence, easy care, and adaptability in both low-tech and high-tech planted aquariums.
Reaching 6–10 inches tall, C. pontederiifolia displays lush green to reddish-bronze leaves with a gently textured surface and pale undersides. Its thick stems and wide foliage help it stand out in the aquascape, making it a perfect focal point in the midground or lower background of medium to large tanks.
This species is undemanding and grows steadily in a nutrient-rich substrate, especially when supported with root tabs. It tolerates low to moderate lighting and is known to resist algae on its sturdy leaves. Like most crypts, it may experience initial “crypt melt” when introduced to a new tank but quickly regrows once settled.
Care Tips:
Lighting: Low to moderate light; maintains shape and color without high intensity.
Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate is ideal; root tabs help in inert substrates.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 72°F–82°F
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Tank Size: Best for tanks 10 gallons and up.
Growth Rate: Moderate, steady with consistent care.
Maintenance: Remove older leaves; maintain stable conditions to avoid melt.
Cryptocoryne pontederiifolia is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a bold, low-maintenance midground plant with distinct, paddle-shaped leaves. It blends beautifully in natural aquascapes and provides hiding spots for fish and shrimp.
