Crushed Ice Sagittaria for Sale — Rare Variegated Pond Marginal With Year-Round Visual Drama

If you’ve been searching for Crushed Ice Sagittaria for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Sagittaria graminea ‘Crushed Ice’ right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. This rare variegated cultivar of grassy arrowhead is one of the most visually distinctive marginal plants available for pond edges and water gardens. Its lance-shaped leaves — unlike the broad arrowhead shape of many sagittaria — are dramatically mottled, marbled, and splashed in creamy white, bright green, and soft yellow-green in an irregular pattern that shifts and changes from leaf to leaf. The overall effect resembles light refracting through crushed ice on a clear summer day, earning the cultivar its evocative name. In midsummer, spikes of small white flower clusters with bright yellow centers rise above the variegated foliage, adding a secondary layer of seasonal interest to an already striking plant. Crushed Ice Sagittaria for sale at Quinn’s Fins arrives in a 2″ pot, nursery-grown and ready to establish at your pond margin or in a container water garden.

Why Pond Keepers Choose Crushed Ice Sagittaria for Sale

Crushed Ice Sagittaria is not a plant you find at every garden center or pond supply. It is a cultivated mutation of a native Eastern North American species — scarce in the trade, immediately recognizable, and genuinely unlike anything else at the pond edge. For pond keepers who want something that draws a second look and starts a conversation, this is it.

  • Dramatic creamy white, green, and yellow-green variegated foliage — no two leaves are alike
  • White flower clusters with bright yellow centers in midsummer — seasonal bloom accent above the variegated leaves
  • Hardy in Zones 5–11 — one of the broadest hardiness ranges of any variegated pond marginal available
  • Lance-shaped foliage form — a graceful, less architectural alternative to broad-leaved arrowhead varieties
  • Spreads by underground runners and winter tubers — naturalizes gradually without aggressive takeover
  • Excellent shade tolerance — a listed good performer in filtered light or fewer than 3 hours of direct sun daily
  • Cultivated mutation of a native Eastern North American species — supports local pond ecosystems
  • Non-invasive — will not spread aggressively or escape into natural waterways

Growing Crushed Ice Sagittaria — Care at a Glance

Light

Crushed Ice Sagittaria performs in full sun to part shade and is notably shade-tolerant compared to most pond marginals. It is listed as a good performer in filtered light or fewer than 3 hours of direct sun daily — making it a valuable option for partially shaded pond settings where other variegated marginals struggle. Full sun produces the most vigorous growth and strongest variegation contrast.

Water & Planting Depth

Plant Crushed Ice Sagittaria in moist soil at the pond margin or in a submerged container in water up to 4″ deep for younger plants, up to 12″ deep at maturity. Plant in a 2-gallon or larger container using loamy soil with the crown above the soil surface. Set the container in the pond at the appropriate depth. Tubers and underground runners will gradually spread within the container over time.

Hardiness & Overwintering

Crushed Ice Sagittaria is hardy in USDA Zones 5–11. Established plants die back in winter to underground tubers and return reliably from the root system each spring. The winter tubers — which resemble small acorns — are the plant’s overwintering mechanism and should not be disturbed or discarded when above-ground growth disappears in fall. In Zones 5–6, a light mulch layer over the container through winter adds protection.

Establishment & Growth

A note on establishment: Crushed Ice Sagittaria is more challenging to establish than plain species sagittaria and requires a little more patience in the first season. Young plants focus on root development before pushing significant above-ground growth. Once established, plants grow reliably and spread steadily via runners. Do not judge a first-season plant by its early size — consistent moisture, appropriate light, and patience produce strong results.

Maintenance

Divide established clumps every 2–3 years in early spring to maintain vigor and control spread within the container. Remove dead or yellowing foliage as needed through the growing season. No serious pest or disease issues to manage. Cannot be shipped to Puerto Rico.
