Canna Bengal Tiger for Sale — Bold Variegated Foliage and Brilliant Orange Blooms for Pond Margins

If you’ve been searching for Canna Bengal Tiger for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Canna × generalis ‘Bengal Tiger’ — also known as Canna Pretoria — right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Canna Bengal Tiger is one of the most immediately striking and visually arresting aquatic marginal plants available for pond margins and water gardens — its dramatic yellow and dark green striped variegated foliage creating a bold, tropical statement that is visible from across the yard and impossible to overlook. Each broad leaf is boldly striped lengthwise with vivid yellow bands against rich dark green — a pattern that genuinely earns this plant its evocative name. Rising above this spectacular foliage display on tall stems, brilliant orange flowers with yellow edges appear from midsummer and bloom continuously until frost — creating a season-long dual-layer color display that few other pond margin plants can approach. Canna Bengal Tiger for sale at Quinn’s Fins grows 4 to 6 feet tall, tolerates shallow water up to 6 inches, and attracts hummingbirds and butterflies throughout the bloom season. Ships in a 2″ pot ready to establish.

Why Canna Bengal Tiger for Sale Is a Standout Water Garden Plant

Canna Bengal Tiger delivers something that solid-green and dark-foliage cannas cannot — a plant where the foliage itself is as spectacular as the flowers, creating visual impact every single day of the growing season regardless of bloom status.

  • Dramatically bold yellow and dark green striped variegated foliage — each leaf a statement piece visible from across the water garden
  • Brilliant orange flowers with yellow edges — stunning contrast against the striped foliage throughout midsummer to frost
  • 4–6 feet tall — commanding vertical background presence at the pond edge and water garden margin
  • Tolerates shallow water up to 6 inches — suitable for pond shelves, bog gardens, and moist pond margin planting
  • Blooms midsummer to frost — one of the longest bloom windows of any canna variety
  • Deer resistant — a practical advantage in garden settings with browsing pressure
  • Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies — exceptional multi-pollinator value throughout the growing season
  • Hardy in Zones 7b–11 — wide climate adaptability with appropriate overwintering

Growing Canna Bengal Tiger — Care at a Glance

Light

Canna Bengal Tiger performs best in full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for most prolific blooming and most vivid variegated foliage color. In partial sun, the plant grows but produces fewer flowers and the yellow striping in the foliage may be less intense. Full sun is strongly recommended for the boldest visual impact.

Water and Soil

Canna Bengal Tiger thrives in consistently moist to wet soil and tolerates shallow water up to 6 inches over the container. For pond use, plant in a 5-gallon or larger container with rich loamy aquatic soil and set in the pond so water covers the pot. When introducing to pond water, do so gradually — allow the plant to acclimate to aquatic conditions rather than submerging immediately. It also grows beautifully in rich, moist garden border soil with consistent irrigation. The rhizomes are thick — over an inch in diameter — and benefit from a large 5-gallon container that can be removed for overwintering.

Fertilization

Canna Bengal Tiger is a heavy feeder — regular fertilization throughout the growing season is essential for maximum bloom production and the most vivid foliage striping. Use aquatic fertilizer tablets in pond container settings, pushed directly into the soil every 3–4 weeks. In garden border settings, a balanced granular or liquid fertilizer with bloom-promoting phosphorus supports strong performance. Fish waste in established pond settings provides supplemental nutrition.

Hardiness and Overwintering

Canna Bengal Tiger is hardy in USDA Zones 7b–11. In Zones 9–11, rhizomes can remain in the ground or pond year-round in mild winters. In Zones 7b–8, mulch heavily and move pond containers to the most sheltered area. Below Zone 7b, cut foliage back to 6 inches after frost, lift rhizomes from the container, and store in peat or dry medium in a cool, dark, frost-free location (50–60°F) until replanting after last frost the following spring.

Maintenance

Remove spent flower stalks after each bloom cycle to encourage continuous new flower production. Deadheading is the single most important maintenance practice for maximizing Bengal Tiger’s famously long bloom season from midsummer to frost. Protect from strong wind — tall plants may need staking in exposed positions. Cut all foliage to the ground in autumn and dispose of it to prevent canna leaf roller larvae from overwintering in the leaf material.
