Canna Australia for Sale — The Darkest Foliage of Any Canna With Shocking Red Summer Blooms

If you’ve been searching for Canna Australia for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Canna × generalis ‘Australia’ right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Canna Australia holds a distinction no other canna variety can claim — it has the deepest, darkest, most dramatically colored foliage in the entire Canna world. Its broad, upright leaves emerge in a rich deep burgundy-black with a glossy satin sheen that catches light with a luminous quality unlike any other pond marginal plant. This intense dark coloration holds superbly through summer heat without fading — providing a season-long backdrop of extraordinary drama against which its large, shocking red to vermillion flowers create one of the most visually powerful color contrasts in the water garden. Canna Australia for sale at Quinn’s Fins grows 4 to 6 feet tall at pond margins and in moist water garden settings, attracts hummingbirds, and blooms continuously from summer through fall. Ships in a 2″ pot ready to establish.

Why Canna Australia for Sale Is the Most Dramatic Dark-Foliage Water Garden Plant Available

Canna Australia occupies a category of its own in the water garden plant world — a dark-foliage tropical specimen that delivers a visual impact no green-leaved plant, no matter how large or floriferous, can replicate.

  • The deepest burgundy-black foliage of any canna — the defining characteristic that makes Canna Australia instantly recognizable and irreplaceable in any water garden design
  • Glossy satin sheen on leaves — catches and reflects light in a luminous way that standard matte-finish canna foliage cannot match
  • Intense foliage color holds through summer heat — does not fade or bleach under prolonged sun exposure
  • Large shocking red to vermillion flowers — creates one of the most dramatic color contrasts in the water garden when red blooms rise above near-black leaves
  • Continuous blooming from summer through fall — flowers in the heat of mid to late summer when many other plants stop performing
  • 4–6 feet tall — commanding vertical background presence at the pond edge
  • Attracts hummingbirds — a reliable summer hummingbird magnet throughout the bloom season
  • Hardy in Zones 7b–11 — performs across a wide climate range with appropriate overwintering

Growing Canna Australia — Care at a Glance

Light

Canna Australia performs best in full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In full sun, the burgundy-black foliage color is most intense, bloom production is most prolific, and the plant reaches its full 4–6 foot height. In partial shade, the plant grows but produces fewer flowers and the dramatic foliage color may be somewhat less intense. Full sun is strongly recommended for the most striking visual impact.

Water and Soil

Canna Australia thrives in consistently moist to wet soil at the pond margin and tolerates shallow water up to 6 inches over the pot. For pond use, plant in a 5-gallon or larger container with rich loamy aquatic soil and set in the pond so water covers the pot. For garden border use, plant in rich, humus-rich, well-draining moist soil with consistent irrigation. Canna Australia is highly water-tolerant but does not require standing water the way true water cannas like Canna glauca hybrids do — it performs beautifully in permanently moist pond margin soil outside standing water.

Fertilization

Canna Australia is a heavy feeder — regular monthly fertilization with a bloom-promoting fertilizer is essential for maximum flower production and leaf size. In pond settings, use aquatic fertilizer tablets pushed into the container soil. In garden settings, use a balanced granular or liquid fertilizer with elevated phosphorus for bloom support. Unfertilized plants will grow but produce significantly fewer flowers.

Hardiness and Overwintering

Canna Australia is hardy in USDA Zones 7b–11. In Zones 9–11, rhizomes can remain in the ground or pond year-round in mild winters. In Zones 7b–8, apply deep mulch over the container or rhizomes in the ground and move pond containers to the shallowest sheltered area to protect from freezing. Below Zone 7b, lift rhizomes in autumn, cut foliage back to 6 inches, and store in a cool, dark, frost-free location (50–60°F) until replanting after last frost in spring.

Maintenance

Remove spent flower stalks after each bloom cycle to encourage continuous new flower production and keep the plant looking its best. Prune foliage back to the ground in fall after frost has killed the above-ground growth. Keep leaf litter cleared from the pond surface regularly. Monitor for canna leaf rollers — treat with spinosad or Bacillus thuringiensis spray and dispose of all foliage at season end to prevent larval overwintering.
