Why Anubias Hastifolia on Driftwood for Sale Stands Apart From All Other Anubias
Most Anubias species are compact, low-growing foreground and midground plants. Anubias hastifolia is different — it is a background specimen plant that delivers dramatic vertical scale and bold leaf architecture that smaller Anubias simply cannot approach.
- Among the largest Anubias species available — tall stalks up to 16″ with spear-shaped leaves reaching 10″ in length
- Distinctive arrowhead and spear-shaped leaves — a unique leaf form that immediately differentiates it from all other Anubias in the tank
- Pre-mounted on natural 8–10″ Malaysian driftwood — place directly in your aquarium with zero preparation required
- Grows horizontally via rhizome — spreads naturally across the driftwood over time, creating an increasingly impressive display
- Extremely tough, leathery leaves — one of the few Anubias species recommended specifically for African cichlid and goldfish tanks
- Low to moderate light requirement — thrives without high-output lighting or specialized equipment
- No CO2 injection required — ideal for low-tech and beginner setups
- Shrimp and invertebrate safe — broad leaf surfaces provide excellent resting and grazing areas
About Malaysian Driftwood
Malaysian driftwood is the preferred hardscape wood for freshwater aquariums — dense, sink-ready, and naturally rich in tannins that create the warm amber tones of a natural blackwater environment. Unlike lighter woods, Malaysian driftwood sinks immediately without soaking or weighting. Tannins released by the wood have a mild acidifying and antibacterial effect that many fish and shrimp species find beneficial. Each piece is unique in natural form within the 8–10″ size range.
Growing Anubias Hastifolia — Care at a Glance
Never Bury the Rhizome
The rhizome — the thick horizontal stem from which all leaves and roots emerge — must never be buried in substrate. A buried rhizome will rot and kill the plant. Your pre-mounted piece arrives with the rhizome correctly positioned on the driftwood surface. Do not reposition it into substrate.
Placement
Anubias hastifolia is a background plant due to its size — tall stalks and large leaves need room to develop. Position the driftwood at the mid-to-back area of the aquarium where the full vertical height can be appreciated. The plant will continue to root and spread naturally along the driftwood surface over time.
Light
Anubias hastifolia thrives in low to moderate lighting. Avoid intense direct light — like all Anubias, its slow-growing leaves are prone to algae colonization under excessive illumination without CO2 supplementation. Position under the canopy of floating plants or taller stem plants for natural algae prevention.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
- Flow: Low to moderate
CO2 & Fertilization
CO2 is not required. Regular liquid fertilizer supplementation — particularly iron — stimulates new leaf production and maintains deep green color. In established fish tanks, the bioload typically provides sufficient nutrients without additional dosing.
Tough Tank Compatibility
Anubias hastifolia’s large, leathery leaves are exceptionally resistant to damage from digging cichlids, goldfish, and large herbivorous fish. Pre-mounted on driftwood, it cannot be uprooted — making it one of the most practical choices for tanks where most aquarium plants fail.
Growth Rate & Longevity
Anubias hastifolia is slow-growing with fewer leaves per plant than most Anubias species — this is characteristic of large-leaved species and is entirely normal. Each new leaf is a statement piece. Well-maintained specimens are extraordinarily long-lived, persisting and growing for many years.
Terrarium and Paludarium Use
Anubias hastifolia can be grown emersed in terrarium and paludarium builds with sufficient humidity and moisture at the root zone. In emersed conditions it may grow somewhat faster and produce white spathe flowers.
