Diet

Piano Snails are omnivorous scavengers that feed primarily on biofilm, algae, detritus, and soft decaying organic matter in their natural habitat. In the aquarium, they readily consume uneaten fish food, sinking pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, and cucumber. They are not considered strong algae eaters compared to species like Nerite snails, so they should not be relied upon as a primary algae control solution — but they are exceptional general scavengers that help maintain overall tank cleanliness. Offer calcium-rich foods regularly to support healthy shell growth and prevent shell degradation, particularly in softer water conditions.

Breeding

Piano Snails are true livebearers — females release fully-formed miniature young measuring just 2 to 4 millimeters every few weeks, most often at night. Unlike prolific egg-laying snail species, Piano Snail reproduction is naturally slow and self-limiting, typically producing only a small number of offspring per birth and up to around 20 young per year per female. This makes the Piano Snail one of the few breeding aquarium snails that will never cause a population explosion, even under ideal housing conditions. Snails reach sexual maturity at approximately three months of age. Males can be distinguished from females by their noticeably thickened and sometimes twisted right antenna — a key identifying feature since shell coloration and shape vary too widely to determine sex visually.

Piano Snails are peaceful, slow-moving, and shy by nature, making them excellent additions to community aquariums.
