Description
Cryptocoryne Balansae for Sale — Dramatic Ruffled Leaves and Natural Reed-Bed Texture for Aquarium Backgrounds
If you’ve been searching for Cryptocoryne Balansae for sale, Quinn’s Fins grows Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae — commonly known as Crypt Balansae or Balansae Plant — right here in our on-site nursery greenhouse. Cryptocoryne Balansae is one of the most visually striking background crypts available for planted freshwater aquariums — and one that stands decisively apart from the compact, broad-leaved Cryptocoryne varieties most aquarists know. Native to the fast-flowing, calcium-rich limestone rivers of southern Thailand, it produces long, narrow, deeply ruffled and puckered leaves with a distinctive hammered texture that reaches 8 to 16 inches in height — swaying naturally in current to create the look and feel of a lush underwater reed bed that adds height, movement, and dramatic contrast to any aquascape. Cryptocoryne Balansae for sale at Quinn’s Fins is available in two formats — bare root (SKU 6107-1, $5.99) and in a 2″ pot (SKU 6107-2, $7.99) — both nursery-grown and ready to plant.
Why Cryptocoryne Balansae for Sale Stands Apart From Other Crypts
Most Cryptocoryne species are compact, rosette-forming foreground and midground plants. Cryptocoryne Balansae is different — it is a tall, background-scale crypt that delivers dramatic vertical presence and a leaf texture unlike anything else in the planted tank hobby.
- Long, narrow, deeply ruffled leaves reaching 8–16″ — a dramatically distinctive leaf form unlike any compact Cryptocoryne species
- Hammered, puckered leaf texture — deeply bullated surface catches and diffracts light beautifully throughout the day
- Leaves sway naturally in gentle current — creates a living, kinetic reed-bed effect in the background
- Low to moderate light requirement — one of the few tall background plants that genuinely thrives without high-output lighting
- No CO2 injection required — performs well in low-tech setups
- Thrives in hard, calcium-rich water — one of the few crypts that performs better in harder water conditions
- Heavy root feeder — develops a deep, extensive root system that anchors firmly and is virtually immovable once established
- Provides excellent fish habitat — dense tall stands create natural swim-through zones that community fish actively use
Growing Cryptocoryne Balansae — Care at a Glance
Plant Once — Never Move
Cryptocoryne Balansae strongly dislikes being moved or disturbed once established. Choose your planting location carefully before introducing this plant — it is a background plant and should be placed in the back of the aquarium from the start. Moving established plants triggers stress, leaf drop, and crypt melt. Plant it in its permanent location and allow it to establish undisturbed. This is the single most important care practice for long-term success.
Crypt Melt — Normal on Introduction
Like all Cryptocoryne species, Balansae may experience leaf drop — crypt melt — when first introduced to a new aquarium. This is completely normal and does not indicate plant failure. The root system remains active below the substrate and new leaves will emerge within 3–5 weeks as the plant adjusts to its new water conditions. Do not remove the plant during this period. Avoid any drastic parameter changes during the acclimation window.
Calcium — Critical for Healthy Leaf Form
Calcium supplement is highly recommended, as the plant’s leaves will grow twisted and deformed without it. Cryptocoryne Balansae originates from high-limestone waterways — it needs calcium in the water column to develop the beautiful ruffled, puckered leaf form it is famous for. In soft water tanks, supplement with calcium or use crushed coral in the filter to raise hardness. The distinctive bullated leaf texture is the direct result of adequate calcium — without it, leaves grow flat, narrow, and uninspiring.
Substrate
Cryptocoryne Balansae is a heavy root feeder — nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs are essential for best growth. In rich aquarium soil, this plant establishes strongly and spreads via runners relatively quickly. In inert gravel or sand, root tabs placed beneath the plant and refreshed every 2–3 months are essential. Plant with roots deeply buried — the extensive root system benefits from at least 3–4 inches of substrate depth — and the crown positioned just at or slightly above the substrate surface.
Light
Cryptocoryne Balansae grows in low to moderate lighting. To achieve the attractive puckering or ruffled effect of the Balansae plant’s leaves, lighting of at least 2–3 watts per gallon is needed. In lower light, the plant remains healthy but leaf ruffling and puckering is less pronounced. Moderate light produces the most dramatic hammered leaf texture that defines this species.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
- pH: 6.8–7.5 — prefers neutral to slightly alkaline conditions
- Hardness: Moderately hard to hard; prefers calcium-rich water — use crushed coral or calcium supplement in soft water tanks
- Flow: Low to moderate — gentle current enhances the natural sway of the tall leaves
CO2 & Fertilization
CO2 injection is not required. CO2 supplementation is beneficial but not necessary — the plant will also benefit from supplemental fertilizers and nutrient-rich substrate. Regular liquid fertilizer — particularly iron, calcium, and micronutrients — supports healthy leaf development and the distinctive ruffled texture. Root tabs are the most effective fertilization method for this heavy root feeder.
Runners & Maintenance
Once established, Cryptocoryne Balansae spreads via runners and can expand to fill a significant area of the background. A regular cutback of runners is necessary to control spread — cut through the substrate with a sharp knife or razor blade to sever runners, or pull them out and replant closer to the mother plant. Remove old or yellowing leaves by cutting at the base. No other regular maintenance is required.
Design Use
Cryptocoryne Balansae works beautifully as a background planting behind rocks and driftwood, where its tall ruffled leaves rise naturally above the hardscape and add depth and movement without the blocky mass of broad-leaved plants. It pairs exceptionally well with shorter Cryptocoryne species in the foreground and midground — browse our Cryptocoryne Wendtii Green and Cryptocoryne Lucens as natural companion plants that create a seamless Cryptocoryne foreground-to-background layering effect.
