Cardinal Flower for Sale — Electric Red Native Blooms for Pond Margins and Water Gardens

Looking for Cardinal Flower for sale? Lobelia cardinalis is one of the most breathtaking native perennials you can grow in a wet garden setting. Its tall, upright spikes — rising up to 4 feet — are packed with tubular scarlet-red flowers that seem to glow in late summer light. From midsummer into early fall, Cardinal Flower puts on a performance that hummingbirds never forget and gardeners never tire of. If you have a wet spot, a pond margin, or a rain garden that needs bold vertical color, this is the plant for it.

Why Gardeners Choose Cardinal Flower

Cardinal Flower thrives where most ornamentals struggle — in reliably wet, boggy, and saturated soils along pond edges, stream banks, and rain garden basins. It’s a native perennial perfectly adapted to the conditions it will face, and it delivers exceptional wildlife value alongside its striking visual presence.

  • Brilliant scarlet-red flower spikes bloom midsummer to early fall — one of the longest late-season color windows available
  • Unmatched hummingbird attraction — tubular flower shape is perfectly adapted for hummingbird feeding
  • Also attracts butterflies, hawk moths, and bumblebees — exceptional pollinator value
  • Deer and rabbit resistant — all parts contain alkaloids that deter browsing
  • Native to Eastern North America — supports local ecosystems and wildlife habitat
  • Helps filter excess nutrients from pond water — a functional benefit alongside its beauty
  • Hardy in Zones 3–9 — one of the widest cold-hardiness ranges of any pond marginal

Growing Cardinal Flower — Care at a Glance

Light

Cardinal Flower performs in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates (Zones 7–9), afternoon shade helps prevent stress and prolongs the bloom period. In cooler zones, full sun produces the strongest growth and most vivid flower color.

Water & Soil

Moisture is non-negotiable. Cardinal Flower has shallow roots and cannot tolerate dry soil — it will fail quickly without consistent moisture. Plant it at pond margins, in bog gardens, or in any reliably wet location. It tolerates standing water up to a few inches deep and grows best in rich, loamy, slightly acidic soil. The richer the soil, the more vigorous the performance.

Hardiness & Overwintering

Cardinal Flower is hardy in USDA Zones 3–9. It is winter dormant — stems and foliage die back in fall, but basal rosettes persist at ground level through winter and push new growth in spring. In Zones 3–4, a light mulch layer over the crown protects rosettes through severe cold. If your plant is growing in standing water, move it to a pot above the waterline before hard freeze — freezing water can damage the basal rosette.

Establishment & Bloom Timeline

Cardinal Flower typically takes two years to reach full mature form. In year one, expect a low rosette of lance-shaped leaves up to 6″ long. In year two, the flowering stalk emerges and the plant blooms, dropping seeds for the following season. It is a short-lived perennial but self-seeds reliably in suitable conditions — establishing a long-term self-sustaining presence in the right garden.

Maintenance

Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage reblooming and reduce self-seeding if desired. Remove fallen leaves and flowers from pond water promptly — all parts of Cardinal Flower are toxic due to lobeline alkaloids and should not be consumed by fish. Divide established clumps every 2–3 years in early spring to maintain vigor.

Important Toxicity Note

All parts of Lobelia cardinalis are toxic if ingested, due to the presence of lobeline and lobelamine alkaloids. Keep fallen foliage and flowers cleared from pond water to prevent fish from consuming them. Keep away from pets and children. Cardinal Flower is deer and rabbit resistant for the same reason — its alkaloid content effectively deters browsing without the use of any additional compounds.
